Acacia of Regeneration

An interesting and important symbol in Freemasonry. Botauically, it is the acacia vera of Tournefort, and the mimoia nilotica of Linnaeus. It grew abundantly in the vicinity of Jerusalem, where it is still to be found, and is familiar in its modern use as the tree from which the gum arabic of commerce is derived.

Oliver, it is true, says that " there is not the smallest trace of any tree of the kind growingso far north as Jerusalem," (Landm. li. 149;) but this statement is refuted by the authority of Lieutenant Lynch, who eaw it growing in great abundance in Jericho, and still farther north. (Erped. to Dead Sea, p. 262.) The Rabbi Joseph Schwarz, who is excellent authority, says: "The Acacia (Shittim) tree, Al Sunt, is found in Palestine of different varieties ; it looks like the Mulberry tree, attains a great height, and has a hard wood. The gum which is obtained from it is the gum arabic." (Descriptive Geography and Historical Sketch of Palestine, p. 308, Letter's translation. Phila., 1850.) Schwarz was for sixteen years a resident of Palestine, and wrote from personal observation. The testimony of Lynch and Schwarz should, therefore, forever settle the question of the existence of the acacia in Palestine.

The acacia, which, in Scripture, is always called Xlti ink, and in the plural Shittim, was esteemed a sacred wood among the Hebrews. Of it Moses was ordered to make the tabernacle, the ark of the covenant, the table for the shewbread, and the rest of the sacred furniture. Isaiah, in recounting the promises of God's mercy to the Israelites on their return from the captivity, tells them that, among other things, he will plant in the wilderness, for their relief and refreshment, the cedar, the acacia, (or, as it is rendered in our common version, the thittah,) the fir, and other trees.

The first thing, then, that we notice in this symbol of the acacia, is that it had been always consecrated from among the other trees of the forest by the sacred purposes to which it was devoted. By the Jew, the tree from whose wood the sanctuary of the tabernacle and the holy ark had been constructed would ever be viewed as more sacred than ordinary trees. The early Masons, therefore, very naturally appropriated this hallowed plant to the equally sacred purpose of a symbol, which was to teach an important divine truth in all ages to come.
Having thus briefly disposed of the natural history of this plant, we may now proceed to examine it in its symbolic relations.

First. The acacia, in the mythic system of Freemasonry, is preeminently the symbol Of the IMMORTALITY OF THE SOUL— that important doctrine which it is the great design of the Institution to teach. As the evanescent nature of the flower, which "cometh forth and is cut down," reminds us of the transitory nature of human life, so the perpetual renovation of the evergreen plant, which uninterruptedly presents the appearance of youth and vigor, is aptly compared to that spiritual life in which the soul, freed from the corruptible companionship of the body, shall enjoy an eternal spring and an immortal youth. Hence, in the impressive funeral service of our Order, it is said that " this evergreen is an emblem of our faith in the immortality of the soul. By this we are reminded that we have an immortal part within us, which shall survive the grave, and which shall never, never, never die." And again, in the closing sentences of the monitorial lecture of the third degree, the same sentiment is repeated, and we are told that by "the ever-green and ever-living sprig" the Mason is strengthened "with confidence and composure to look forward to a blessed immortality." Such an interpretation of the symbol is an easy and a natural one; it suggests itself at once to the least reflective mind; and consequently, in some one form or another, is to be found existing in all ages and nations. It was an ancient custom, — which is not, even now, altogether disused, — for mourners to carry in their hands at funerals a sprig of some evergreen, generally the cedar or the cypress, and to deposit it in the grave of the deceased. According to Dalcho,* the Hebrews always planted a sprig of the acacia at the head of the grave of a departed friend. Potter tells us that the ancient Greeks "had a custom of bedecking tombs with herbs and flowers." f All sorts of purple and white flowers were acceptable to the dead, but principally the amaranth and the myrtle. The very name of the former of these plants, which signifies "never fading," would seem to indicate the true symbolic meaning of the usage, although archaeologists have generally supposed it to be simply an exhibition of love on the part of the survivors. Ragon says, that the ancients substituted the acacia for all other plants because they believed it to be incorruptible, and not liable to injury from the attacks of any kind of insect or other animal— thus symbolizing the incorruptible nature of the soul.

Hence we see the propriety of placing the sprig of acacia, as an emblem of immortality, among the symbols of that degree, all of whose ceremonies are intended to teach us the great truth that " the life of man, regulated by morality, faith, and justice, will be rewarded at its closing hour by the prospect of Eternal Bliss." t So, therefore, says Dr. Oliver, when the Master Mason exclaims " my name is Acacia," it is equivalent to saying, " I have been in the grave — I have triumphed over it by rising from the dead — and being regenerated in the process, I have a claim to life everlasting."

The sprig of acacia, then, in its most ordinary signification, presents itself to the Master Mason as a symbol of the immortality of the soul, being intended to remind him, by its evergreen and unchanging nature, of that better and spiritual part within us, which, as an emanation from the Grand Architect of the Universe, can never die. And as this is the most ordinary, the most generally accepted signification, so also is it the most important; for thus, as the peculiar symbol of immortality, it becomes the most appropriate to an Order all of whose teachings are intended to inculcate the great lesson that "life rises out of the grave." But incidental to this the acacia has two other interpretations which are well worthy of investigation.

Secondly, then, the acacia is a symbol of Innocence. The symbolism here is of a peculiar and unusual character, depending not on any real analogy in the form or use of the symbol to the idea symbolized, but simply on a double or compound meaning of the word. For anama, in the Greek language, signifies both the plant in question and the moral quality of innocence or purity of'life. In this sense the symbol refers, primarily, to him over whose solitary grave the acacia was planted, and whose virtuous conduct, whose integrity of life and fidelity to his trusts have ever been presented as patterns to the craft, and consequently to all Master Masons, who, by this interpretation of the symbol, are invited to emulate his example.
Hutchinson, indulging: in his favorite theory of Christianizing Masonry, when he comes to this signification of the symbol, thus enlarges on the interpretation: "We Masons, describing the deplorable estate of religion under the Jewish law, speak in figures:—'Her tomb was in the rubbish and filth cast forth of the temple, and Acacia wove its branches over her monument;' nknkin being the Greek word for innocence, or being free from sin; implying that the sins and corruptions of the old law and devotees of the Jewish altar had hid religion from those who sought her, and she was only to be found where innocence survived, and under the banner of the divine Lamb; and as to ourselves, professing that we were to be distinguished by our Acaey, or as true Acacians in our religious faith and tenets."

But, lastly, the acacia is to be considered as the symbol of Initiation. This is by far the most interesting of its interpretations, and was, we have every reason to believe, the primary and original; the others being but incidental. It leads us at once to the investigation of the significant fact that in all the ancient initiations and religious mysteries there was some plant peculiar to each, which was consecrated by its own esoteric meaning, and which occupied an important position in the celebration of the rites, so that the plant, whatever it might be, from its constant and prominent use in the ceremonies of initiation, came at length to be adopted as the symbol of that initiation.

Thus, the lettuce was the sacred plant which assumed the place of the acacia in the mysteries of Adonis. (See Lettuce.) The lotut was that of the Brahminical rites of India, and from them adopted by the Egyptians. (See Lotus.) The Egyptians also revered the erica or heath; and the mistletoe was a mystical plant among the Druids. (See Erica, and Mistletoe.) And, lastly, the myrtle performed the same office of symbolism in the mysteries of Greece that the lotus did in Egypt or the mistletoe among the Druids. See Myrtle,
In all of these ancient mysteries, while the sacred plant was a symbol of initiation, the initiation itself was symbolic of the resurrection to a future life, and of the immortality of the soul. In this view, Freemasonry is to us now in the place of the ancient initiations, and the acacia is substituted for the lotus, the erica, the ivy, the mistletoe, and the myrtle. The lesson of wisdom is the same — the medium of imparting it is all that has been changed.
Returning, then, to the acacia, we find that it is capable of three explanations. It is a symbol of immortality, of innocence, and of initiation. But these three significations are closely connected, and that connection must be observed, if we desire to obtain a just interpretation of the symbol. Thus, in this one symbol, we are taught that in the initiation of life, of which the initiation in the third degree is simply emblematic, innocence must for a time lie in the grave, at length, however, to be called, by the word of the Grand Master of the Universe, to a blissful immortality. Combine with this the recollection of the place where the sprig of acacia was planted,—Mount Calvary, — the place of sepulture of him who " brought life and immortality to light," and who, in Christian Masonry, is designated, as he is in Scripture, as "the lion of the tribe of Judah;" and remember, too, that in the mystery of his death, the wood of the cross takes the place of the acacia, and in this little and apparently insignificant symbol, but which is really and truly the mdst important and significant one in Masonic science, we have a beautiful suggestion of all the mysteries of life and death, of time and eternity, of the present and of the future.

The Cabala

This word is frequently written Kabbala, which see. CABALA. The mystical philosophy or theosophy of the Jews is called the Cabala. The word is derived from the Hebrew Kabal, signifying to receive, because it is the doctrine received from the elders. It has sometimes been used in an enlarged sense, as comprehending all the explanations, maxims, and ceremonies which have been traditionally handed down to the Jews; but in that more limited acceptation, in which it is intimately connected with the symbolic science of Freemasonry, the Cabala may be defined to be a system of philosophy which embraces certain mystical interpretations of Scripture, and metaphysical and spiritual beings. In these interpretations and speculations, according to the Jewish doctors, were enveloped the most profound truths of religion, which, to be comprehended by finite beings, are obliged to be revealed through the medium of symbols and allegories.

Buxtorf (Lexicon of the Talmud) defines the Cabala to be a secret science, which treats in a mystical and enigmatical manner of things divine, angelical, theological, celestial, and metaphysical; the subjects being enveloped in striking symbols and secret modes of teaching. Much use is made of it in the advanced degrees, and entire Rites have been constructed on its principles. Hence it demands a place in any general work on Freemasonry.
In what estimation the Cabala is held by Jewish scholars, we may learn from the traditions which they teach, and which Doctor Ginsburg has given in his exhaustive work ( Kabbalah, page 84) in the following words:

The Cabalah was first taught by God himself to a select company of angels, who formed a theosophic school in Paradise. After the Fall, the angels most graciously communicated this heavenly doctrine to the disobedient child of earth, to furnish the protoplasts With the means of returning to their pristine nobility and felicity. From Adam it passed over to Noah, and then to Abraham, the friend of God, who emigrated with it to Egypt, where the patriarch allowed a portion of this mysterious doctrine to ooze out. It was in this way that the Egyptians obtained some knowledge of it, and the other Eastern nations could introduce it into their philosophical systems. Moses, who was learned in all the wisdom of Egypt, was first initiated into it in the land of his birth, but became most proficient in it during his wanderings in the wilderness, when he not only devoted to it the leisure hours of the whole forty years, but received lessons in it from one of the angels. By the aid of this mysterious science, the lawgiver was enabled to solve the difficulties which arose during his management of the Israelites, in spite of the pilgrimages, wars, and the frequent miseries oi the nation. He covertly laid down the principles of this secret doctrine in the first four books of the Pentateuch, but withheld them from Deuteronomy.

This constitutes the former the man, and the latter the woman. Moses also initiated the seventy elders into the secrets of this doctrine, and they again transmitted them from hand to hand. Of all who formed the unbroken line of tradition, David and Solomon were first initiated into the Cabalah. No one, however, dared to write it down till Simon ben Jochai, who lived at the time of the destruction of the second Temple. Having been condemned to death by Titus, Rabbi Simon managed to escape with his son, and concealed himself in a cavern, where he remained for twelve years. Here in this subterranean abode, he occupied himself entirely with the contemplation of the sublime Cabalah, and was constantly visited by the prophet Elias, who disclosed to him some of its secrets, which were still concealed from the theosophical Rabbi. Here, too, his disciples resorted to be indicated by their master into these divine mysteries, and here Simon ben Jochai expired with this heavenly doctrine in his mouth, whilst discoursing on it to his disciples. Scarcely had his spirit departed, when a dazzling light filled the cavern, so that no one could look at. the Rabbi; whilst a burning fire appeared outside, forming as it were a sentinel at the entrance of the cave, and denying admittance to the neighbors. It was not till the light inside, and the fire outside, had disappeared, that the disciples perceived that the lamp of Israel was extinguished.

As they were preparing for his obsequies, a voice was heard from heaven, saying, " Come ye to the marriage of Simon ben Jochai; he is entering into peace, and shall rest in his chamber!" A flame preceded the coffin, which seemed enveloped by and burning like fire. And when the remains were deposited in the tomb, another voice was heard from heaven, saying, "This is he who caused the earth to quake and the kingdoms to shake! " His son, Rabbi Eliezer, and his secretary, Rabbi Abba, as well as his disciples, then collated Rabbi Simon ben Jochai's treatises, and out of these composed the celebrated work called Sohar, that is, Splendor, which is the grand storehouse of Cabalism.

The Cabala is divided into two kinds, the Practical and the Theoretieal. The Practical Cabala is occupied in instructions for the construction of talismans and amulets, and has no connection with Masonic science.The Theoretical Cabala is again divided into the Dogmatic and the Literal. The Dogmatic Cabala is the summary of the rabbinical theosophy and philosophy. The Literal Cabala is the science which teaches a mystical mode of explaining sacred things by a peculiar use of the letters of words, and a reference to their value. Each of these divisions demands a separate attention.

The Cryptogram; Masonic Example of Secrecy

No treatise which deals with symbolism would be complete without a section devoted to the consideration of cryptograms. The use of ciphers has long been recognized as indispensable in military and diplomatic circles, but the modern world has overlooked the important rôle played by cryptography in literature and philosophy. If the art of deciphering cryptograms could be made popular, it would result in the discovery of much hitherto unsuspected wisdom possessed by both ancient and mediæval philosophers. It would prove that many apparently verbose and rambling authors were wordy for the sake of concealing words.

Ciphers are hidden in the most subtle manner: they may be concealed in the watermark of the paper upon which a book is printed; they may be bound into the covers of ancient books; they may be hidden under imperfect pagination; they may be extracted from the first letters of words or the first words of sentences; they may be artfully concealed in mathematical equations or in apparently unintelligible characters; they may be extracted from the jargon of clowns or revealed by heat as having been written in sympathetic ink; they may be word ciphers, letter ciphers, or apparently ambiguous statements whose meaning could be understood only by repeated careful readings; they may he discovered in the elaborately illuminated initial letters of early books or they may be revealed by a process of counting words or letters. If those interested in Freemasonic research would give serious consideration to this subject, they might find in books and manuscripts of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries the information necessary to bridge the gap in Masonic history that now exists between the Mysteries of the ancient world and the Craft Masonry of the last three centuries.

The arcana of the ancient Mysteries were never revealed to the profane except through the media of symbols. Symbolism fulfilled the dual office of concealing the sacred truths from the uninitiated and revealing them to those qualified to understand the symbols. Forms are the symbols of formless divine principles; symbolism is the language of Nature. With reverence the wise pierce the veil and with clearer vision contemplate the reality; but the ignorant, unable to distinguish between the false and the true, behold a universe of symbols. It may well be said of Nature--the Great Mother--that she is ever tracing strange characters upon the surface of things, but only to her eldest and wisest sons as a reward for their faith and devotion does she reveal the cryptic alphabet which is the key to the import of these tracings.

The temples of the ancient Mysteries evolved their own sacred languages, known only to their initiates and never spoken save in the sanctuary. The illumined priests considered it sacrilege to discuss the sacred truths of the higher worlds or the divine verities of eternal Nature in the same tongue as that used by the vulgar for wrangling and dissension. A sacred science must needs be couched in a sacred language. Secret alphabets also were invented, and whenever the secrets of the wise were committed to writing, characters meaningless to the uninformed were employed. Such forms of writing were called sacred or Hermetic alphabets. Some--such as the famous angelic writing--are still retained in the higher degrees of Masonry.
Secret alphabets were not entirely satisfactory, however, for although they rendered unintelligible the true nature of the writings, their very presence disclosed the fact of concealed information--which the priests also sought to conceal. Through patience or persecution, the keys to these alphabets were eventually acquired and the contents of the documents revealed to the unworthy. This necessitated employment of more subtle methods for concealing the divine truths. The result was the appearance of cryptic systems of writing designed to conceal the presence of both the message and the cryptogram. Having thus devised a method of transmitting their secrets to posterity, the illuminati encouraged the circulation of certain documents specially prepared through incorporating into them ciphers containing the deepest secrets of mysticism and philosophy. Thus mediæval philosophers disseminated their theories throughout Europe without evoking suspicion, since volumes containing these cryptograms could be subjected to the closest scrutiny without revealing the presence of the hidden message.

During the Middle Ages scores of writers--members of secret political or religious organizations--published books containing ciphers. Secret writing became a fad; every European court had its own diplomatic cipher, and the intelligentsia vied with one another in devising curious and complicated cryptograms. The literature of the fifteenth, sixteenth, and seventeenth centuries is permeated with ciphers, few of which have ever been decoded. Many of the magnificent scientific and philosophic intellects of this period dared not publish their findings, because of the religious intolerance of their day. In order to preserve the fruitage of their intellectual labors for mankind, these pioneers of progress concealed their discoveries in ciphers, trusting that future generations, more kindly than their own, would discover and appreciate their learning.

From Selenus' Cryptomenytices et Cryptographiæ.

One year after the publication of the first Great "Shakespearian" Folio, a remarkable volume on cryptogram, and ciphers was published. The title page of the work is reproduced above. The year of its publication (1624) was during the Rosicrucian controversy. The translation of the title page is as follows:

"The Cryptomenysis and Cryptography of Gustavus Selenus in nine books, to which is added a clear explanation of the System of Steganography of John Trithemius, Abbot of Spanheim and Herbipolis, a man of admirable genius. Interspersed with worthy inventions of the Author and others, 1624." The author of this volume was believed to be Augustus, Duke of Brunswick. The symbols and emblems ornamenting the title page, however, are conclusive evidence that the fine hand of the Rosicrucians was behind its publication. At the bottom of the picture is a nobleman (Bacon?) placing his hat on another man's head. In the oval at the top of the plate, it is possible that the lights are beacons, or a play upon the name Bacon. In the two side panels are striking and subtle "Shakespearian" allusions. On the left is a nobleman (possibly Bacon) handing a paper to another man of mean appearance who carries in his hand a spear. At the right, the man who previously carried the spear is shown in the costume of an actor, wearing spurs and blowing a horn. The allusion to the actor blowing his horn and the figure carrying the spear suggest much, especially as spear is the last syllable of the name "Shakespeare."

Many churchmen, it is interesting to note, used cryptograms, fearing excommunication or a worse fate should their scientific researches be suspected. Only recently an intricate cipher of Roger Bacon's has been unraveled, revealing the fact that this early scientist was well versed in the cellular theory. Lecturing before the American Philosophical Society, Dr. William Romaine Newbold, who translated the cipher manuscript of the friar, declared: "There are drawings which so accurately portray the actual appearance of certain objects that it is difficult to resist the inference that Bacon had seen them with the microscope. * * * These are spermatozoa, the body cells and the seminiferous tubes, the ova, with their nuclei distinctly indicated. There are nine large drawings, of which one at least bears considerable resemblance to a certain stage of development of a fertilized cell." (See Review of Reviews, July, 1921.) Had Roger Bacon failed to conceal this discovery under a complicated cipher, he would have been persecuted as a heretic and would probably have met the fate of other early liberal thinkers. In spite of the rapid progress made by science in the last two hundred and fifty years, it still remains ignorant concerning many of the original discoveries made by mediæval investigators. The only record of these important findings is that contained in the cryptograms of the volumes which they published. While many authors have written on the subject of cryptography, the books most valuable to students of philosophy and religion are: Polygraphia and Steganographia, by Trithemius, Abbot of Spanheim; Mercury, or The Secret and Swift Messenger, by John Wilkins, Bishop of Chester; Œdipus ægyptiacus and other works by Athanasius Kircher, Society of Jesus; and Cryptomenytices et Cryptographiæ, by Gustavus Selenus.

To illustrate the basic differences in their construction and use, the various forms of ciphers are here grouped under seven general headings:

1. The literal cipher. The most famous of all literal cryptograms is the famous biliteral cipher described by Sir Francis Bacon in his De Augmentis Scientiarum. Lord Bacon originated the system while still a young man residing in Paris. The biliteral cipher requires the use of two styles of type, one an ordinary face and the other specially cut. The differences between the two fonts are in many case so minute that it requires a powerful magnifying glass to detect them. Originally, the cipher messages were concealed only in the italicized words, sentences, or paragraphs, because the italic letters, being more ornate than the Roman letters, offered greater opportunity for concealing the slight but necessary variations. Sometimes the letters vary a trifle in size; at other times in thickness or in their ornamental flourishes. Later, Lord Bacon is believed to have had two Roman alphabets specially prepared in which the differences were so trivial that it is almost impossible for experts to distinguish them.

A careful inspection of the first four "Shakespeare" folios discloses the use throughout the volumes of several styles of type differing in minute but distinguishable details. It is possible that all the "Shakespeare" folios contain ciphers running through the text. These ciphers may have been added to the original plays, which are much longer in the folios than in the original quartos, full scenes having been added in some instances.
The biliteral cipher was not confined to the writings of Bacon and "Shakespeare," however, but appears in many books published during Lord Bacon's lifetime and for nearly a century after his b death. In referring to the biliteral cipher, Lord Bacon terms it omnia per omnia. The cipher may run through an entire book and be placed therein at the time of printing without the knowledge of the original author, for it does not necessitate the changing of either words or punctuation. It is possible that this cipher was inserted for political purposes into many documents and volumes published during the seventeenth century. It is well known that ciphers were used for the same reason as early as the Council of Nicæa.

The Baconian biliteral cipher is difficult to use today, owing to the present exact standardization of type and the fact that so few books are now hand set. Accompanying this chapter are facsimiles of Lord Bacon's biliteral alphabet as it appeared in the 1640 English translation of De Augmentis Scientiarum. There are four alphabets, two for the capital and two for the small letters. Consider carefully the differences between these four and note that each alphabet has the power of either the letter a or the letter b, and that when reading a word its letters are divisible into one of two groups: those which correspond to the letter a and those which correspond to the letter b. In order to employ the biliteral cipher, a document must contain five times as many letters as there are in the cipher message to be concealed, for it requires five letters to conceal one. The biliteral cipher somewhat resembles a telegraph code in which letters are changed into dots and dashes; according to the biliteral system, however, the dots and dashes are represented respectively by a's and b's. The word biliteral is derived from the fact that all letters of the alphabet may be reduced to either a or b. An example of biliteral writing is shown in one of the accompanying diagrams. In order to demonstrate the working of this cipher, the message concealed within the words "Wisdom and understanding are more to be desired than riches" will now be deciphered.

The first step is to discover [he letters of each alphabet and replace them by their equivalent a or b in accordance with the key given by Lord Bacon in his biliteral alphabet (q.v.). In the word wisdom, the W is from the b alphabet; therefore it is replaced by a b. The i is from the a alphabet; therefore an a is put in its place. The s is also from the a alphabet, but the d belongs to the b alphabet. The o and the m both belong to the a alphabet is replaced by a. By this process the word WISDOM become baabaa. Treating the remaining words of the sentence in a similar manner, AND becomes aba; UNDERSTANDING, aaabaaaaaabab; ARE, aba; MORE, abbb; TO, ab; BE, ab; DESIRED, abaabaa; THAN, aaba; RICHES, aaaaaa.
The next step is to run all the letters together; thus:

baabaaabaaaabaaaaaabababaabbbabababaabaaaabaaaaaaa. All the combinations used in the Baconian biliteral cipher consist of groups containing five letters each. Therefore the solid line of letters must be broken into groups of five in the following manner: baaba aabaa aabaa aaaab ababa abbba babab aabaa aabaa aaaaa. Each of these groups of five letters now represents one letter of the cipher, and the actual letter can now be determined by comparing the groups with the alphabetical table, The Key to the Biliteral Cipher, from De Augmentis Scientiarum (q.v.): baaba = T, aabaa = E, aabaa = E; aaaab = B; ababa = L; abbba = P; babab = X; aabaa = E, aabaa = E; aaaaa = A; but the last five letters of the word riches being set off by a period from the initial r, the last five a's do not count in the cipher. The letters thus extracted are now brought together in order, resulting in TEEBLPXEE.

At this point the inquirer might reasonably expect the letters to make intelligible words; but he will very likely be disappointed, for, as in the case above, the letters thus extracted are themselves a cryptogram, doubly involved to discourage those who might have a casual acquaintance with the biliteral system. The next step is to apply the nine letters to what is commonly called a wheel (or disc) cipher (q.v.), which consists of two alphabets, one revolving around the other in such a manner that numerous transpositions of letters are possible. In the accompanying cut the A of the inner alphabet s opposite the H of the outer alphabet, so that for cipher purposes these letters are interchangeable. The F and M, the P, and Y, the W and D, in fact all the letters, may be transposed as shown by the two circles. The nine letters extracted by the biliteral cipher may thus be exchanged for nine others by the wheel cipher. The nine letters are considered as being on the inner circle of the wheel and are exchanged for the nine letters on the outer circle which are opposite the inner letters. By this process the T becomes A; the two E's become two L's; the B becomes I, the L becomes S; the P becomes W; the X becomes E; and the two E's become two L's. The result is ALLISWELL, which, broken up into words, reads: "All is well."
In the above sentence note carefully the formation of the letters. Compare each letter with the two types of letters in the biliteral alphabet table reproduced from Lord Bacon's De Augmentis Scientiarum. A comparison of the "d" in "wisdom" with the "d" in "and" discloses a large loop at the top of the first, while the second shows practically no loop at all. Contrast the "i" in "wisdom" with the "i" in "understanding." In the former, the lines are curved and in the latter angular. A similar analysis of the two "r's" in "desired" reveals obvious differences. The "o" in "more" differs only from the "o" in "wisdom" in that it a tiny line continues from the top over towards the "r." The "a" in "than" is thinner and more angular than the "a" in "are," while the "r" in "riches" differs from that in "desired" in that the final upright stroke terminates in a ball instead of a sharp point. These minor differences disclose the presence of the two alphabets employed in writing the sentence.

THE BILITERAL ALPHABET.

From Bacon's De Augmentis Scientiarum.

This Plate is reproduced from Bacon's De Augmentis Scientiarum, and shows the two alphabets as designed by him for the purpose of his cipher. Each capital and small letter has two distinct forms which are designated "a" and "b". The biliteral system did not in every instance make use of two alphabets in which the differences were as perceptible as in the example here given, but the two alphabets were always used; sometimes variations are so minute that it requires a powerful magnifying glass to distinguish the difference between the "a" and "b" types of letters.

Of course, by moving the inner disc of the wheel cipher, many different combinations in addition to the one given above can be made of the letters, but this is the only one which will produce sense, and the cryptogrammatist must keep on experimenting until he discovers a logical and intelligible message. He may then feel reasonably sure that he has deciphered the system. Lord Bacon involved the biliteral cipher in many different ways. There are probably a score of different systems used in the "Shakespeare" folio alone, some so intricate that they may forever baffle all attempts at their decipherment. In those susceptible of solution, sometimes the a's and b's have to be exchanged; at other times the concealed message is written backwards; again only every other letter is counted; and so on.

By substituting the letters of the lower alphabet for their equivalents in the upper one, a meaningless conglomeration results, the hidden message being decoded by reversing the process. There is also a form of the literal cipher in which the actual cryptogram is written in the body of the document, but unimportant words are inserted between important ones according to a prearranged order. The literal cipher also includes what are called acrostic signatures--that is, words written down the column by the use of the first letter of each line and also more complicated acrostics in which the important letters are scattered through entire paragraphs or chapters. The two accompanying alchemical cryptograms illustrate another form of the literal cipher involving the first letter of each word. Every cryptogram based upon the arrangement or combination of the letters of the alphabet is called a literal cipher.

2. The pictorial cipher. Any picture or drawing with other than its obvious meaning may be considered a pictorial cryptogram. Instances of pictorial cipher are frequently found in Egyptian symbolism and early religious art. The diagrams of alchemists and Hermetic philosophers are invariably pictorial ciphers. In addition to the simple pictorial cipher, there is a more technical form in which words or letters are concealed by the number of stones in a wall, by the spread of birds' wings in flight, by ripples on the surface of water, or by the length and order of lines used in shading. Such cryptograms are not obvious, and must be decoded with the aid of an arbitrary measuring scale, the length of the lines determining the letter or word concealed. The shape and proportion of a building, the height of a tower, the number of bars in a window, the folds of a man's garments--even the proportions or attitude of the human body--were used to conceal definite figures or characters which could be exchanged for letters or words by a person acquainted with the code.

Initial letters of names were secreted in architectural arches and spans. A notable example of this practice is found on the title page of Montaigue's Essays, third edition, where an initial B is formed by two arches and an F by a broken arch. Pictorial cryptograms are sometimes accompanied by the key necessary for their decipherment. A figure may point toward the starting point of the cipher or carry in its hand some implement disclosing the system of measurement used. There are also frequent instances in which the cryptographer purposely distorted or improperly clothed some figure in his drawing by placing the hat on backwards, the sword on the wrong side, or the shield on the wrong arm, or by employing some similar artifice. The much-discussed fifth finger on the Pope's hand in Raphael's Sistine Madonna and the sixth toe on Joseph's foot in the same artist's Marriage of the Virgin are cunningly concealed cryptograms.

3. The acroamatic cipher. The religious and philosophical writings of all nations abound with acroamatic cryptograms, that is, parables and allegories. The acroamatic is unique in that the document containing it may be translated or reprinted without affecting the cryptogram. Parables and allegories have been used since remote antiquity to present moral truths in an attractive and understandable manner. The acroamatic cryptogram is a pictorial cipher drawn in words and its symbolism must be so interpreted. The Old and New Testaments of the Jews, the writings of Plato and Aristotle, Homer's Odyssey and Iliad, Virgil's æneid, The Metamorphosis of Apuleius, and æsop's Fables are outstanding examples of acroamatic cryptography in which are concealed the deepest and most sublime truths of ancient mystical philosophy.

The acroamatic cipher is the most subtle of all, for the parable or allegory is susceptible of several interpretations. Bible students for centuries have been confronted by this difficultly. They are satisfied with the moral interpretation of the parable and forget that each parable and allegory is capable of seven interpretations, of which the seventh--the highest--is complete and all-inclusive, whereas the other six (and lesser) interpretations are fragmentary, revealing but part of the mystery. The creation myths of the world are acroamatic cryptograms, and the deities of the various pantheons are only cryptic characters which, if properly understood, become the constituents of a divine alphabet. The initiated few comprehend the true nature of this alphabet, but the uninitiated many worship the letters of it as gods.
James Campbell Brown reprints a curious cipher from Kircher. The capital letters of the seven words in the outer circle read clockwise, form the word SVLPHVR. From the words in the second circle, when read in a similar manner, is derived FIXVM. The capitals of the six words in the inner circle, when properly arranged, also read ESTSOL. The following cipher is thus extracted: "Sulphur Fixum Est Sol," which when translated is: "Fixed sulphur is gold."

Beginning with the word VISITA and reading clockwise, the seven initial letters of the seven words inscribed in the outer circle read: VITRIOL. This is a very simple alchemical enigma, but is a reminder that those studying works on Hermeticism, Rosicrucianism, alchemy, and Freemasonry should always be on the lookout for concealed meanings hidden either in Parables and allegories or in cryptic arrangements of numbers, letters, and words.

A CRYPTIC DEPICTION OF DIVINE AND NATURAL JUSTICE.

From Selenus' Cryptomenytices et Cryptographiæ.

The first circle portrays the divine antecedents of justice, the second the universal scope of justice, and the third the results of human application of justice. Hence, the first circle deals with divine principles, the second circle with mundane affairs, and the third circle with man. On the at the top of the picture sits Themis, the presiding spirit of law, and at her feet three other queens--Juno, Minerva, and Venus--their robes ornamented with geometric figures. The axis of law connects the throne, of divine justice above with the throne of human judgment at the bottom of the picture. Upon the latter throne is seated a queen with a scepter in her hand, before whom stands the winged goddess Nemesis--the angel of judgment.
The second Circle is divided into three parts by two sets of two horizontal lines. The upper and light section is called the Supreme Region and is the abode of the gods, the good spirits, and the heroes. The lower and dark section is the abode of lust, sin, and ignorance. Between these two extremes is the larger section in which are blended the powers and impulses of both the superior and the inferior regions.

In the third or inner circle is man, a tenfold creature, consisting of nine parts--three of spirit, three of intellect, and three of soul--enclosed within one constitution. According to Selenus, man's three spiritual qualities are thought, speech, and action; his three intellectual qualities are memory, intelligence, and will; and his three qualities of soul are understanding, courage, and desire. The third circle is further divided into three parts called ages: the Golden Age of spiritual truth in the upper right section, the Iron Age of spiritual darkness in the lower right section and the Bronze Age--a composite of the two occupying the entire left half of the inner circle and itself divided into three parts. The lowest division of the Bronze Age depicts ignorant man controlled by force, the central the partly awakened man controlled by jurisprudence, and the upper the spiritually illuminated man controlled by love. Both the second and third circles revolve upon the axis of law, but the divine source, of law--Heavenly Justice--is concealed by clouds. All of the symbols and figures ornamenting the plate are devoted to a detailed amplification of the principles here outlined.

4. The numerical cipher. Many cryptograms have been produced in which numbers in various sequences are substituted for letters, words, or even complete thoughts. The reading of numerical ciphers usually depends upon the possession of specially arranged tables of correspondences. The numerical cryptograms of the Old Testament are so complicated that only a few scholars versed in rabbinical lore have ever sought to unravel their mysteries. In his Œdipus ægyptiacus, Athanasius Kircher describes several Arabian Qabbalistic theorems, and a great part of the Pythagorean mystery was concealed in a secret method in vogue among Greek mystics of substituting letters for numbers.

The most simple numerical cipher is that in which the letters of the alphabet are exchanged for numbers in ordinary sequence. Thus A becomes 1, B 2, C 3, and so on, counting both I and J as 9 and both U and V as 20. The word yes by this system would be written 23-5-18. This cipher can be made more difficult by reversing the alphabet so that Z becomes 1, Y 2, X 3, and so on. By inserting a non-significant, or uncounted, number after each of the significant numbers the cipher is still more effectively concealed, thus: 23-16-5-9-18. The word yes is found by eliminating the second and fourth numbers. By adding 23, 5, and 18 together the sum 46 results. Therefore 46 is the numerical equivalent of the word yes. According to the simple numerical cipher, the sum 138 is equal to the words Note carefully. Therefore in a book using this method, line 138, page 138, or paragraph 138 may contain the concealed message. In addition to this simple numerical cipher there are scores of others so complicated that no one without the key can hope to solve them.

Authors sometimes based their cryptograms upon the numerical value of their own names; for example, Sir Francis Bacon repeatedly used the cryptic number 33--the numerical equivalent of his name. Numerical ciphers often involve the pagination of a book. Imperfect pagination, though generally attributed to carelessness, often conceals important secrets. The mispaginations found in the 1623 folio of "Shakespeare" and the consistent recurrence of similar errors in various volumes printed about the same period have occasioned considerable thought among scholars and cryptogrammatists. In Baconian cryptograms, all page numbers ending in 89 seem to have a special significance. The 89th page of the Comedies in the 1623 folio of "Shakespeare" shows an error of type in the pagination, the "9" being from a considerably smaller font than the "8." The 189th page is entirely missing, there being two pages numbered 187; and page 188 shows the second " 8 " scarcely more than half the size of the first one. Page 289 is correctly numbered and has no unusual features, but page 89 of the Histories is missing. Several volumes published by Bacon show similar errors, page 89 being often involved.

There are also numerical ciphers from which the cryptic message may be extracted by counting every tenth word, every twentieth word, or every fiftieth word. In some cases the count is irregular. The first important word may be found by counting 100, the second by counting 90, the third by counting 80, and so on until the count of 10 is reached. The count then returns to 100 and the process is repeated.

5. The musical cipher. John Wilkins, afterwards Bishop of Chester, in 1641 circulated an anonymous essay entitled Mercury, or the Secret and Swift Messenger. In this little volume, which was largely derived from the more voluminous treatises of Trithemius and Selenus, the author sets forth a method whereby musicians can converse with each other by substituting musical notes for the letters of the alphabet. Two persons understanding the code could converse with each other by merely playing certain notes upon a piano or other instrument. Musical cryptograms can be involved to an inconceivable point; by certain systems it is possible to take an already existing musical theme and conceal in it a cryptogram without actually changing the composition in any way. The pennants upon the notes may conceal the cipher, or the actual sounds of the notes may be exchanged for syllables of similar sound. This latter method is effective but its scope is somewhat limited. Several musical compositions by Sir Francis Bacon are still in existence. An examination of them might reveal musical cryptograms, for it is quite certain that Lord Bacon was well acquainted with the manner of their construction.

6. The arbitrary cipher. The system of exchanging letters of the alphabet for hieroglyphic figures is too easily decoded to be popular. Albert: Pike describes an arbitrary cipher based upon the various parts of the Knights Templars' cross, each angle representing a letter. The many curious alphabets that have been devised are rendered worthless, however, by the table of recurrence. According to Edgar Allan Poe, a great cryptogrammatist, the most common letter of the English language is E, the other letters in their order of frequency are as follows: A, O, I, D, H, N, R, S, T, V, Y, C, F, Q L, M, W, B, K, P, Q, X, Z. Other authorities declare the table of frequency to be: E, T, A, O, N, I, R, S, H, D, L, C, W, U, M, F, Y, G, P, B, V, K, X, Q, J, Z. By merely counting the number of times each character appears in the message, the law of recurrence discloses the English letter for which the arbitrary character stands. Further help is also rendered by the fact that if the cryptogram be split up into words there are only three single letters which may form words: A, I, O. Thus any single character set off from the rest of the text must be one of these three letters. For details of this System see The Gold Bug, by Edgar Allan Poe.

To render more difficult the decoding of arbitrary ciphers, however, the characters are seldom broken up into words, and, further, the table of recurrence is partly nullified by assigning two or more different characters to each letter, thereby making it impossible to estimate accurately the frequency of recurrence. Therefore, the greater the number of arbitrary characters used to represent any single letter of the alphabet, the more difficult it is to decipher an arbitrary cryptogram. The secret alphabets of the ancients are comparatively easy to decode, the only requisites being a table of frequency, a knowledge of the language in which the cryptogram was originally written, a moderate amount of patience, and a little ingenuity.

7. The code cipher. The most modem form of cryptogram is the code system. Its most familiar form is the Morse code for use in telegraphic and wireless communication. This form of cipher may be complicated somewhat by embodying dots and dashes into a document in which periods and colons are dots, while commas and semicolons are dashes. There are also codes used by the business world which can be solved only by the use of a private code book. Because they furnish an economical and efficient method of transmitting confidential information, the use of such codes is far more prevalent than the average person has any suspicion.

In addition to the foregoing classifications there are a number of miscellaneous systems of secret writing, some employing mechanical devices, others colors. A few make use of sundry miscellaneous objects to represent words and even complete thoughts. But as these more elaborate devices were seldom employed by the ancients or by the mediæval philosophers and alchemists, they have no direct bearing upon religion and philosophy. The mystics of the Middle Ages, borrowing the terminology of the various arts and sciences, evolved a system of cryptography which concealed the secrets of the human soul under terms generally applied to chemistry, biology, astronomy, botany, and physiology. Ciphers of this nature can only be decoded by individuals versed in the deep philosophic principles upon which these mediæval mystics based their theories of life. Much information relating to the invisible nature of man is concealed under what seem to be chemical experiments or scientific speculations. Every student of symbolism and philosophy, therefore, should be reasonably well acquainted with the underlying principles of cryptography; in addition to serving him well in his researches, this art furnishes a fascinating method of developing the acuteness of the mental faculties. Discrimination and observation are indispensable to the seeker after knowledge, and no study is equal to cryptography as a means of stimulating these powers.
Curious alphabets were invented by the early and mediæval philosophers to conceal their doctrines and tenets from the profane. Some of these alphabets are still used to a limited extent in the higher degrees of Freemasonry. Probably the most famous is the angelic writing, termed in the above plate "The Writing called Malachim." Its figures are supposedly derived from the constellations. Advanced students of occult philosophy will come upon many valuable documents in which these figures are used. Under each letter of the first alphabet above is its equivalent in English. Above each letter of the other three alphabets is its Hebrew letter equivalent.

THERE is in the legends of the Scandinavians a marvelous record of the coming of the Comet. It has been regarded as a wild, unmeaning rhapsody of words, or as a premonition of some future earth catastrophe.
The very name is significant. According to Professor Anderson's etymology of the word, it means "the darkness of the gods"; from regin, gods, and rökr, darkness; but it may, more properly, be derived from the Icelandic, Danish, and Swedish regn, a rain, and rök, smoke, or dust; and it may mean the rain of dust, for the clay came first as dust; it is described in some Indian legends as ashes.
And them who others' wives
Shed each other's blood. {p. 142}
Hard is the world!
Sensual sin grows huge.
There are sword-ages, axe-ages;
Shields are cleft in twain;
Storm-ages, murder ages;
Till the world falls dead,
And men no longer spare
Or pity one another."[1]

The world has ripened for destruction; and "Ragnarok," the darkness of the gods, or the rain of dust and ashes, comes to complete the work.
The whole story is told with the utmost detail, and we shall see that it agrees, in almost every particular, with what reason assures us must have happened.
"There are three winters," or years, "during which great wars rage over the world." Mankind has reached a climax of wickedness. Doubtless it is, as now, highly civilized in some regions, while still barbarian in others.
"Then happens that which will seem a great miracle: that the wolf devours the sun, and this will seem a great loss."
That is, the Comet strikes the sun, or approaches so close to it that it seems to do so.
"The other wolf devours the moon, and this, too, will cause great mischief."
We have seen that the comets often come in couples or triplets.
"The stars shall be hurled from heaven."
This refers to the blazing débris of the Comet falling to the earth.
"Then it shall come to pass that the earth will shake so violently that trees will be torn up by the roots, the
[1. Anderson, "Norse Mythology," p. 416.]
{p. 143}
mountains will topple down, and all bonds and fetters will be broken and snapped."
Chaos has come again. How closely does all this agree with Hesiod's description of the shaking earth and the universal conflict of nature?
"The Fenris-wolf gets loose."
This, we shall see, is the name of one of the comets.
"The sea rushes over the earth, for the Midgard-serpent writhes in giant rage, and seeks to gain the land."
The Midgard-serpent is the name of another comet; it strives to reach the earth; its proximity disturbs the oceans. And then follows an inexplicable piece of mythology:
"The ship that is called Naglfar also becomes loose. It is made of the nails of dead men; wherefore it is worth warning that, when a man dies with unpared nails, he supplies a large amount of materials for the building of this ship, which both gods and men wish may be finished as late as possible. But in this flood Naglfar gets afloat. The giant Hrym is its steersman.
"The Fenris-wolf advances with wide-open mouth; the upper jaw reaches to heaven and the lower jaw is on the earth."
That is to say, the comet extends from the earth to the sun.
"He would open it still wider had he room."
That is to say, the space between the sun and earth is not great enough; the tail of the comet reaches even beyond the earth.
"Fire flashes from his eyes and nostrils."
A recent writer says:
"When bright comets happen to come very near to the sun, and are subjected to close observation under the
{p. 144}
advantages which the fine telescopes of the present day afford, a series of remarkable changes is found to take place in their luminous configuration. First, jets of bright light start out from the nucleus, and move through the fainter haze of the coma toward the sun; and then these jets are turned backward round the edge of the coma, and stream from it, behind the comet, until they are fashioned into a tail."[1]
"The Midgard-serpent vomits forth venom, defiling all the air and the sea; he is very terrible, and places himself side by side with the wolf."
The two comets move together, like Biela's two fragments; and they give out poison--the carbureted-hydrogen gas revealed by the spectroscope.
"In the midst of this clash and din the heavens are rent in twain, and the sons of Muspelheim come riding through the opening."
Muspelheim, according to Professor Anderson,[2] means the day of judgment." Muspel signifies an abode of fire, peopled by fiends. So that this passage means, that the heavens are split open, or appear to be, by the great shining comet, or comets, striking the earth; it is a world of fire; it is the Day of Judgment.
"Surt rides first, and before him and after him flames burning fire."
Surt is a demon associated with the comet;[3] he is the same as the destructive god of the Egyptian mythology, Set, who destroys the sun. It may mean the blazing nucleus of the comet.
"He has a very good sword that shines brighter than the sun. As they ride over Bifrost it breaks to pieces, as has before been stated."
[1. "Edinburgh Review," October, 1874, p. 207.
2. "Norse Mythology," p. 454.
3. Ibid., p. 458.]
{p. 145}
Bifrost, we shall have reason to see hereafter, was a prolongation of land westward from Europe, which connected the British Islands with the island-home of the gods, or the godlike race of men.
There are geological proofs that such a land once existed. A writer, Thomas Butler Gunn, in a recent number of an English publication,[1] says:
"Tennyson's 'Voyage of Maeldune' is a magnificent allegorical expansion of this idea; and the laureate has also finely commemorated the old belief in the country of Lyonnesse, extending beyond the bounds of Cornwall:
'A land of old upheaven from the abyss
By fire, to sink into the abyss again;
Where fragments of forgotten peoples dwelt,
And the long mountains ended in a coast
Of ever-shifting sands, and far away
The phantom circle of a moaning sea.'
"Cornishmen of the last generation used to tell stories of strange household relics picked up at the very low tides, nay, even of the quaint habitations seen fathoms deep in the water."
There are those who believe that these Scandinavian Eddas came, in the first instance, from Druidical Briton sources.
The Edda may be interpreted to mean that the Comet strikes the planet west of Europe, and crushes down some land in that quarter, called "the bridge of Bifrost."
Then follows a mighty battle between the gods and the Comet. It can have, of course, but one termination; but it will recur again and again in the legends of different nations. It was necessary that the gods, the protectors of mankind, should struggle to defend them against these strange and terrible enemies. But their very helplessness
[1. "All the Year Round."]
{p. 146}
and their deaths show how immense was the calamity which had befallen the world.
The Edda continues:
"The sons of Muspel direct their course to the plain which is called Vigrid. Thither repair also the Fenris-wolf and the Midgard-serpent."
Both the comets have fallen on the earth.
"To this place have also come Loke" (the evil genius of the Norse mythology) "and Hrym, and with him all the Frost giants. In Loke's company are all the friends of Hel" (the goddess of death). "The sons of Muspel have then their efficient bands alone by themselves. The plain Vigrid is one hundred miles (rasts) on each side."
That is to say, all these evil forces, the comets, the fire, the devil, and death, have taken possession of the great plain, the heart of the civilized land. The scene is located in this spot, because probably it was from this spot the legends were afterward dispersed to all the world.
It is necessary for the defenders of mankind to rouse themselves. There is no time to be lost, and, accordingly, we learn--
"While these things are happening, Heimdal" (he was the guardian of the Bifrost-bridge) "stands up, blows with all his might in the Gjallar-horn and awakens all the gods, who thereupon hold counsel. Odin rides to Mimer's well to ask advice of Mimer for himself and his folk.
"Then quivers the ash Ygdrasil, and all things in heaven and earth tremble."
The ash Ygdrasil is the tree-of-life; the tree of the ancient tree-worship; the tree which stands on the top of the pyramid in the island-birth place of the Aztec race; the tree referred to in the Hindoo legends.
"The asas" (the godlike men) "and the einherjes" (the heroes) "arm themselves and speed forth to the battlefield. Odin rides first; with his golden helmet, resplendent
{p. 147}
byrnie, and his spear Gungner, he advances against the Fenris-wolf" (the first comet). "Thor stands by his side, but can give him no assistance, for he has his hands full in his struggle with the Midgard-serpent" (the second comet). "Frey encounters Surt, and heavy blows are exchanged ere Frey falls. The cause of his death is that he has not that good sword which he gave to Skirner. Even the dog Garm," (another comet), "that was bound before the Gnipa-cave, gets loose. He is the greatest plague. He contends with Tyr, and they kill each other. Thor gets great renown by slaying the Midgard-serpent, but retreats only nine paces when he falls to the earth dead, poisoned by the venom that the serpent blows upon him."
He has breathed the carbureted-hydrogen gas!
"The wolf swallows Odin, and thus causes his death; but Vidar immediately turns and rushes at the wolf, placing one foot on his nether jaw.
["On this foot he has the shoe, for which materials have been gathering through all ages, namely, the strips of leather which men cut off from the toes and heels of shoes; wherefore he who wishes to render assistance to the asas must cast these strips away."]
This last paragraph, like that concerning the ship Naglfar, is probably the interpolation of some later age. The narrative continues:
"With one hand Vidar seizes the upper jaw of the wolf, and thus rends asunder his mouth. Thus the wolf perishes. Loke fights with Heimdal, and they kill each other. Thereupon Surt flings fire over the earth, and burns up all the world."
This narrative is from the Younger Edda. The Elder Edda is to the same purpose, but there are more allusions to the effect of the catastrophe on the earth
The eagle screams,
And with pale beak tears corpses. . . .
Mountains dash together, {p. 148}
Heroes go the way to Hel,
And heaven is rent in twain. . . .
All men abandon their homesteads
When the warder of Midgard
In wrath slays the serpent.
The sun grows dark,
The earth sinks into the sea,
The bright stars
From heaven vanish;
Fire rages,
Heat blazes,
And high flames play
'Gainst heaven itself"
And what follow then? Ice and cold and winter. For although these things come first in the narrative of the Edda, yet we are told that "before these" things, to wit, the cold winters, there occurred the wickedness of the world, and the wolves and the serpent made their appearance. So that the events transpired in the order in which I have given them.
"First there is a winter called the Fimbul winter,"
"The mighty, the great, the iron winter,"[1]
"'When snow drives from. all quarters, the frosts are so severe, the winds so keen, there is no joy in the sun. There are three such winters in succession, without any intervening summer."
Here we have the Glacial period which followed the Drift. Three years of incessant wind, and snow, and intense cold.
The Elder Edda says, speaking of the Fenris-wolf:
"It feeds on the bodies
Of men, when they die
The seats of the gods
It stains with red blood."
[1. "Norse Mythology," p. 444.]
{p. 149}
This probably refers to the iron-stained red clay cast down by the Comet over a large part of the earth; the "seats of the gods" means the home of the god-like race, which was doubtless covered, like Europe and America, with red clay; the waters which ran from it must have been the color of blood.
"The Sunshine blackens
In the summers thereafter,
And the weather grows bad."
In the Younger Edda (p. 57) we are given a still more precise description of the Ice age:
"Replied Har, explaining, that as soon as the streams, that are called Elivogs" (the rivers from under ice), "had came so far that the venomous yeast" (the clay?) "which flowed with them hardened, as does dross that runs from the fire, then it turned" (as) "into ice. And when this ice stopped and flowed no more, then gathered over it the drizzling rain that arose from the venom" (the clay), "and froze into rime" (ice), "and one layer of ice was laid upon another clear into the Ginungagap."
Ginungagap, we are told,[1] was the name applied in the eleventh century by the Northmen to the ocean between Greenland and Vinland, or America. It doubtless meant originally the whole of the Atlantic Ocean. The clay, when it first fell, was probably full of chemical elements, which rendered it, and the waters which filtered through it, unfit for human use; clay waters are, to this day, the worst in the world.
"Then said Jafnhar: 'All that part of Ginungagap that turns to the north' (the north Atlantic) 'was filled with thick and heavy ice and rime, and everywhere within were drizzling rains and gusts. But the south part of Ginungagap was lighted up by the glowing sparks that flew out of Muspelheim.'"
[1. "Norse Mythology," p. 447.]
{p. 150}
The ice and rime to the north represent the age of ice and snow. Muspelheim was the torrid country of the south, over which the clouds could not yet form in consequence of the heat--Africa.
But it can not last forever. The clouds disappear; the floods find their way back to the ocean; nature begins to decorate once more the scarred and crushed face of the world. But where is the human race? The "Younger Edda" tells us:
"During the conflagration caused by Surt's fire, a woman by the name of Lif and a man named Lifthraser lie concealed in Hodmimer's hold, or forest. The dew of the dawn serves them for food, and so great a race shall spring from them, that their descendants shall soon spread over the whole earth."[1]
The "Elder Edda" says:
"Lif and Lifthraser
Will lie hid
In Hodmimer's-holt;
The morning dew
They have for food.
From them are the races descended."
Holt is a grove, or forest, or hold; it was probably a cave. We shall see that nearly all the legends refer to the caves in which mankind escaped from destruction.
This statement,
"From them are the races descended,"
shows that this is not prophecy, but history; it refers to the past, not to the future; it describes not a Day of Judgment to come, but one that has already fallen on the human family.
Two others, of the godlike race, also escaped in some
[1. "Norse Mythology" p. 429.]
{p. 151}
way not indicated; Vidar and Vale are their names. They, too, had probably taken refuge in some cavern.
"Neither the sea nor Surt's fire had harmed them, and they dwell on the plains of Ida, where Asgard was before. Thither come also the sons of Thor, Mode, and Magne, and they have Mjolner. Then come Balder and Hoder from Hel.
Mode and Magne are children of Thor; they belong to the godlike race. They, too, have escaped. Mjolner is Thor's hammer. Balder is the Sun; he has returned from the abode of death, to which the comet consigned him. Hoder is the Night.
All this means that the fragments and remnants of humanity reassemble on the plain of Ida--the plain of Vigrid--where the battle was fought. They possess the works of the old civilization, represented by Thor's hammer; and the day and night once more return after the long midnight blackness.
And the Vala looks again upon a renewed and rejuvenated world:
"She sees arise
The second time.
From the sea, the earth,
Completely green.
The cascades fall,
The eagle soars,
From lofty mounts
Pursues its prey."
It is once more the glorious, the sun-lighted world the world of flashing seas, dancing streams, and green leaves; with the eagle, high above it all,
"Batting the sunny ceiling of the globe
With his dark wings;"
while
"The wild cataracts leap in glory."
{p. 152}
What history, what poetry, what beauty, what inestimable pictures of an infinite past have lain hidden away in these Sagas--the despised heritage of all the blue-eyed, light-haired races of the world!
Rome and Greece can not parallel this marvelous story:
The gods convene
On Ida's plains,
And talk of the powerful
Midgard-serpent;
They call to mind
The Fenris-wolf
And the ancient runes
Of the mighty Odin."
What else can mankind think of, or dream of, or talk of for the next thousand years but this awful, this unparalleled calamity through which the race has passed?
A long-subsequent but most ancient and cultivated people, whose memory has, for us, almost faded from the earth, will thereafter embalm the great drama in legends, myths, prayers, poems, and sagas; fragments of which are found to-day dispersed through all literatures in all lands; some of them, as we shall see, having found their way even into the very Bible revered alike of Jew and Christian:
The Edda continues,
"Then again
The wonderful Golden tablets
Are found in the grass
In time's morning,
The leader of the gods
And Odin's race
Possessed them."
And what a find was that! This poor remnant of humanity discovers "the golden tablets" of the former
{p. 153}
civilization. Doubtless, the inscribed tablets, by which the art of writing survived to the race; for what would tablets be without inscriptions? For they talk of "the ancient runes of mighty Odin," that is, of the runic letters, the alphabetical writing. And we shall see hereafter that this view is confirmed from other sources.
There follows a happy age:
"The fields unsown
Yield their growth;
All ills cease.
Balder comes.
Hoder and Balder,
Those heavenly gods,
Dwell together in Odin's halls."
The great catastrophe is past. Man is saved, The world is once more fair. The sun shines again in heaven. Night and day follow each other in endless revolution around the happy globe. Ragnarok is past.
{p. 154}

--

WE are told in the Bible (Job, i, 16)--
"While he [Job] was yet speaking, there came also another, and said, The fire of God is fallen from heaven and hath burned up the sheep, and the servants, and consumed them, and I only am escaped alone to tell thee."
And in verse 18 we are told--
"While he was yet speaking, there came also another, and said, Thy sons and thy daughters were eating and drinking wine in their eldest brother's house:
"19. And behold, there came a great wind from the wilderness, and smote the four corners of the house, and it fell upon the young men, and they are dead; and I only am escaped alone to tell thee."
We have here the record of a great convulsion. Fire fell from heaven; the fire of God. It was not lightning, for it killed the seven thousand sheep, (see chap. i, 3,) belonging to Job, and all his shepherds; and not only killed but consumed them--burned them up. A fire falling from heaven great enough to kill seven thousand sheep must have been an extensive conflagration, extending over a large area of country. And it seems to have been accompanied by a great wind--a cyclone--which killed all Job's sons and daughters.
Has the book of Job anything to do with that great event which we have been discussing? Did it originate out of it? Let us see.
In the first place it is, I believe, conceded by the foremost
{p. 277}
scholars that the book of Job is not a Hebrew work; it was not written by Moses; it far antedates even the time of Abraham.
That very high orthodox authority, George Smith, F. S. A., in his work shows that--
"Everything relating to this patriarch has been violently controverted. His country; the age in which he lived; the author of the book that bears his name; have all been fruitful themes of discord, and, as if to confound confusion, these disputants are interrupted by others, who would maintain that no such person ever existed; that the whole tale is a poetic fiction, an allegory!"[1]
Job lived to be two hundred years old, or, according to the Septuagint, four hundred. This great age relegates him to the era of the antediluvians, or their immediate descendants, among whom such extreme ages were said to have been common.
C. S. Bryant says:
"Job is in the purest Hebrew. The author uses only the word Elohim for the name of God. The compiler or reviser of the work, Moses, or whoever he was, employed at the heads of chapters and in the introductory and concluding portions the name of Jehovah; but all the verses where Jehovah occurs, in Job, are later interpolations in a very old poem, written at a time when the Semitic race had no other name for God but Elohim; before Moses obtained the elements of the new name from Egypt."[2]
Hale says:
"The cardinal constellations of spring and autumn, in Job's time, were Chima and Chesil, or Taurus and Scorpio, of which the principal stars are Aldebaran, the Bull's Eye, and Antare, the Scorpion's Heart. Knowing, therefore, the longitudes of these stars at present, the interval
[1. "The Patriarchal Age," vol. i, p. 351.
2. MS. letter to the author, from C. S. Bryant, St. Paul, Minnesota.]
{p. 278}
of time from thence to the assumed date of Job's trial will give the difference of these longitudes, and ascertain their positions then with respect to the vernal and equinoctial points of intersection of the equinoctial and ecliptic; according to the usual rate of the precession of the equinoxes, one degree in seventy-one years and a half."[1]
A careful calculation, based on these principles, has proved that this period was 2338 B. C. According to the Septuagint, in the opinion of George Smith, Job lived, or the book of Job was written, from 2650 B. C. to 2250 B. C. Or the events described may have occurred 25,740 years before that date.
It appears, therefore, that the book of Job was written, even according to the calculations of the orthodox, long before the time of Abraham, the founder of the Jewish nation, and hence could not have been the work of Moses or any other Hebrew. Mr. Smith thinks that it was produced soon after the Flood, by an Arabian. He finds in it many proofs of great antiquity. He sees in it (xxxi, 26, 28) proof that in Job's time idolatry was an offense under the laws, and punishable as such; and he is satisfied that all the parties to the great dialogue were free from the taint of idolatry. Mr. Smith says:
"The Babylonians, Chaldeans, Egyptians, Canaanites, Midianites, Ethiopians of Abyssinia, Syrians, and other contemporary nations, had sunk into gross idolatry long before the time of Moses."
The Arabians were an important branch of the great Atlantean stock; they derived their descent from the people of Add.
"And to this day the Arabians declare that the father of Job was the founder of the great Arabian people."[2]
[1. Hale's "Chronology," vol. ii, p. 55.
2. Smith's "Sacred Annals," vol. i, p. 360.]
{p. 279}
Again, the same author says:
"Job acted as high-priest in his own family; and, minute as are the descriptions of the different classes and usages of society in this book, we have not the slightest allusion to the existence of any priests or specially appointed ministers of religion, a fact which shows the extreme antiquity of the period, as priests were, in all probability, first appointed about the time of Abraham, and became general soon after."[1]
He might have added that priests were known among the Egyptians and Babylonians and Phœnicians from the very beginning of their history.
Dr. Magee says:
"If, in short, there be on the whole, that genuine air of the antique which those distinguished scholars, Schultens, Lowth, and Michaelis, affirm in every respect to pervade the work, we can scarcely hesitate to pronounce, with Lowth and Sherlock, that the book of Job is the oldest in the world now extant."[2]
Moreover, it is evident that this ancient hero, although he probably lived before Babylon and Assyria, before Troy was known, before Greece had a name, nevertheless dwelt in the midst of a high civilization.
"The various arts, the most recondite sciences, the most remarkable productions of earth, in respect of animals, vegetables, and minerals, the classified arrangement of the stars of heaven, are all noticed."
Not only did Job's people possess an alphabet, but books were written, characters were engraved; and some have even gone so far as to claim that the art of printing was known, because Job says, "Would that my words were printed in a book!"
[1. Smith's "Sacred Annals," p. 364.
2. Magee "On the Atonement," vol. ii, p. 84.]
{p. 280}
The literary excellence of the work is of the highest order. Lowth says:
"The antiquary, or the critic, who has been at the pains to trace the history of the Grecian drama from its first weak and imperfect efforts, and has carefully observed its tardy progress to perfection, will scarcely, I think, without astonishment, contemplate a poem produced so many ages before, so elegant in its design, so regular in its structure, so animated, so affecting, so near to the true dramatic model; while, on the contrary, the united wisdom of Greece, after ages of study, was not able to produce anything approaching to perfection in this walk of poetry before the time of Æschylus."[1]
Smith says:
"The debate rises high above earthly things; the way and will and providential dealings of God are investigated. All this is done with the greatest propriety, with the most consummate skill; and, notwithstanding the expression of some erroneous opinions, all is under the influence of a devout and sanctified temper of mind."[2]
Has this most ancient, wonderful, and lofty work, breathing the spirit of primeval times, its origin lost in the night of ages, testifying to a high civilization and a higher moral development, has it anything to do with that event which lay far beyond the Flood?
If it is a drama of Atlantean times, it must have passed through many hands, through many ages, through many tongues, before it reached the Israelites. We may expect its original meaning, therefore, to appear through it only like the light through clouds; we may expect that later generations would modify it with local names and allusions; we may expect that they would even strike out parts whose meaning they failed to understand, and
[1. "Hebrew Poetry," lecture xxxiii.
2. "Sacred Annals," vol. i, p. 365.]
{p. 281}
interpolate others. It is believed that the opening and closing parts are additions made in a subsequent age. If they could not comprehend how the fire from heaven and the whirlwind could have so utterly destroyed Job's sheep, servants, property, and family, they would bring in those desert accessories, SabÆan and Chaldean robbers, to carry away the camels and the oxen.
What is the meaning of the whole poem?
God gives over the government of the world for a time to Satan, to work his devilish will upon Job. Did not God do this very thing when he permitted the comet to strike the earth? Satan in Arabic means a serpent. "Going to and fro" means in the Arabic in "the heat of haste "; Umbreit translates it, "from a flight over the earth."
Job may mean a man, a tribe, or a whole nation.
From a condition of great prosperity Job is stricken down, in an instant, to the utmost depths of poverty and distress; and the chief agency is "fire from heaven" and great wind-storms.
Does this typify the fate of the world when the great catastrophe occurred? Does the debate between Job and his three visitors represent the discussion which took place in the hearts of the miserable remnants of mankind, as they lay hid in caverns, touching God, his power, his goodness, his justice; and whether or not this world-appalling calamity was the result of the sins of the people or otherwise?
Let us see what glimpses of these things we can find in the text of the book.
When Job's afflictions fall upon him he curses his day--the day, as commonly understood, wherein he was born. But how can one curse a past period of time and ask the darkness to cover it?
{p. 282}
The original text is probably a reference to the events that were then transpiring:
"Let that day be turned into darkness; let not God regard it from above; and let not the light shine upon it. Let darkness and the shadow of death cover it; let a mist overspread it, and let it be wrapped up in bitterness. Let a darksome whirlwind seize upon that night. . . . Let them curse it who curse the clay, who are ready to raise up a leviathan."[1]
De Dieu says it should read, "And thou, leviathan, rouse up." "Let a mist overspread it"; literally, "let a gathered mass of dark clouds cover it."
"The Fathers generally understand the devil to be meant by the leviathan."
We shall see that it means the fiery dragon, the comet:
"Let the stars be darkened with the mist thereof; let it expect light and not see it, nor the rising of the dawning of the day."[2]
In other words, Job is not imprecating future evils on a past time--an impossibility, an absurdity: he is describing the events then transpiring--the whirlwind, the darkness, the mist, the day that does not come, and the leviathan, the demon, the comet.
Job seems to regret that he has escaped with his life:
"For now," he says, "should I have lain still and been quiet," (if I had not fled) "I should have slept: then had I been at rest, with kings and counsellors of the earth, which built desolate places for themselves; or with princes that had gold, who filled their houses with silver."[3]
Job looks out over the whole world, swept bare of its inhabitants, and regrets that he did not stay and bide the
[1. Douay version, chapter iii, verses 4-8.
{p. 283}
pelting of the pitiless storm, as, if he had done so, he would be now lying dead with kings and counselors, who built places for themselves, now made desolate, and with princes who, despite their gold and silver, have perished. Kings and counselors do not build "desolate places" for themselves; they build in the heart of great communities; in the midst of populations: the places may become desolate afterward.
Eliphaz the Temanite seems to think that the sufferings of men are due to their sins. He says:
Even as I have seen, they that plough wickedness and sow wickedness, reap the same. By the blast of God they perish, and by the breath of his nostrils are they consumed. The roaring of the lion, and the voice of the fierce lion, and the teeth of the young lions are broken. The old lion perisheth for lack of prey, and the stout lion's whelps are scattered abroad."
Certainly, this seems to be a picture of a great event. Here again the fire of God, that consumed Job's sheep and servants, is at work; even the fiercest of the wild beasts are suffering: the old lion dies for want of prey, and its young ones are scattered abroad.
Eliphaz continues:
"In thoughts, from the visions of the night, when deep sleep falleth on me, fear came upon me, and trembling, which made all my bones to shake. Then a spirit passed before my face, the hair of my flesh stood up."
A voice spake:
"Shall mortal man be more just than God? Shall a man be more pure than his Maker? Behold he put no trust in his servants, and his angels he charged with folly: How much less them that dwell in houses of clay, whose foundation is in the dust, which are crushed before the moth. They are destroyed from morning to evening; they perish forever without any regarding it."
{p. 284}
The moth can crush nothing, therefore Maurer thinks it should read, "crushed like the moth." "They are destroyed," etc.; literally, "they are broken to pieces in the space of a day."[1]
All through the text of Job we have allusions to the catastrophe which had fallen on the earth (chap. v, 3):
"I have seen the foolish taking root: but suddenly I," (God,) "cursed his habitation."
"4. His children are far from safety," (far from any place of refuge?) "and they are crushed in the gate, neither is there any to deliver them.
"5. Whose harvest the hungry eateth up, and taketh it even out of the thorns, and the robber swalloweth up their substance."
That is to say, in the general confusion and terror the harvests are devoured, and there is no respect for the rights of property.
"6. Although affliction cometh not forth of the dust, neither doth trouble spring out of the ground."
In the Douay version it reads:
"Nothing on earth is done without a cause, and sorrow doth not spring out of the ground" (v, 6).
I take this to mean that the affliction which has fallen upon men comes not out of the ground, but from above.
"7. Yet man is born unto trouble, as the sparks fly upward."
In the Hebrew we read for sparks, "sons of flame or burning coal." Maurer and Gesenius say, "As the sons of lightning fly high"; or, "troubles are many and fiery as sparks."
[1. Faussett's "Commentary," iii, 40.]
{p. 285}
"8. I would seek unto God, and unto God would I commit my cause;
"9. Which doeth great things and unsearchable; marvellous things without number:
10. Who giveth rain upon the earth, and sendeth waters upon the fields."
Rain here signifies the great floods which cover the earth.
"11. To set up on high those that be low; that those which mourn may be exalted to safety."
That is to say, the poor escape to the high places--to safety--while the great and crafty perish.
"12. He disappointeth the devices of the crafty, so that their hands can not perform their enterprise.
"13. He taketh the wise in their own craftiness," (that is, in the very midst of their planning,) "and the counsel of the froward is carried headlong," (that is, it is instantly overwhelmed).
"14. They MEET WITH DARKNESS IN THE DAY-TIME, and grope in the noonday as in the night." (Chap. v.)
Surely all this is extraordinary--the troubles of mankind come from above, not from the earth; the children of the wicked are crushed in the gate, far from places of refuge; the houses of the wicked are "crushed before the moth," those that plow wickedness perish," by the "blast of God's nostrils they are consumed"; the old lion perishes for want of prey, and its whelps are scattered abroad. Eliphaz sees a vision, (the comet,) which "makes his bones to shake, and the hair of his flesh to stand up"; the people "are destroyed from morning to evening"; the cunning find their craft of no avail, but are taken; the counsel of the froward is carried headlong; the poor find safety in high places; and darkness comes in midday, so that the people grope their way;
{p. 286}
and Job's children, servants, and animals are destroyed by a fire from heaven, and by a great wind.
Eliphaz, like the priests in the Aztec legend, thinks he sees in all this the chastening hand of God:
"17. Behold, happy is the man whom God correcteth: therefore despise not thou the chastening of the Almighty:
"18. For he maketh sore, and bindeth up: he woundeth, and his hands make whole." (Chap. v.)
We are reminded of the Aztec prayer, where allusion is made to the wounded and sick in the cave "whose mouths were full of earth and scurf." Doubtless, thousands were crushed, and cut, and wounded by the falling stones, or burned by the fire, and some of them were carried by relatives and friends, or found their own way, to the shelter of the caverns.
"20. In famine he shall redeem thee from death: and in war from the power of the sword.
"21. Thou shalt be hid from the scourge of the tongue: neither shalt thou be afraid of destruction when it cometh." (Chap. v.)
"The scourge of the tongue" has no meaning in this context. There has probably been a mistranslation at some stage of the history of the poem. The idea is, probably, "You are hid in safety from the scourge of the comet, from the tongues of flame; you need not be afraid of the destruction that is raging without."
"22. At destruction and famine thou shalt laugh neither shalt thou be afraid of the beasts of the earth.
"23. For thou shalt be in league with THE STONES OF THE FIELD: and the beasts of the field shall be at peace with thee." (Chap. v.)
That is to say, as in the Aztec legend, the stones of the field have killed some of the beasts if the earth, "the lions have perished," and their whelps have been scattered;
{p. 287}
the stones have thus been your friends; and other beasts have fled with you into these caverns, as in the Navajo tradition, where you may be able, living upon them, to defy famine.
Now it may be said that all this is a strained construction; but what construction can be substituted that will make sense of these allusions? How can the stones of the field be in league with man? How does the ordinary summer rain falling on the earth set up the low and destroy the wealthy? And what has all this to do with a darkness that cometh in the day-time in which the wicked grope helplessly?
But the allusions continue
Job cries out, in the next chapter (chap. vi)
"2. Oh that my grief" (my sins whereby I deserved wrath) "were thoroughly weighed, and my calamity laid in the balances together!
3. As the sands of the sea this would appear heavier, therefore my words are full of sorrow. (Douay version.)
'14. For the arrows of the Almighty are within me, the poison whereof drinketh up my spirit; the terrors of God do set themselves in array against me" ("war against me"-Douay ver.).
That is to say, disaster comes down heavier than the sands--the gravel of the sea; I am wounded; the arrows of God, the darts of fire, have stricken me. We find in the American legends the descending débris constantly alluded to as "stones, arrows, and spears"; I am poisoned with the foul exhalations of the comet; the terrors of God are arrayed against me. All this is comprehensible as a description of a great disaster of nature, but it is extravagant language to apply to a mere case of boils.
"9. Even that it would please God to destroy me; that he would let loose his hand and cut me off."
{p. 288}
The commentators say that "to destroy me" means literally "to grind or crush me." (Chap. vi.)
Job despairs of final escape:
"11. What is my strength that I can hold out? And what is I end that I should keep patience?" (Douay.)
"12 . Is my strength the strength of stones? Or is my flesh of brass? "
That is to say, how can I ever bold out? How can I ever survive this great tempest? How can my strength stand the crushing of these stones? Is my flesh brass, that it will not burn up? Can I live in a world where such things are to continue?
And here follow allusions which are remarkable as occurring in an Arabian composition, in a land of torrid beats:
"15. My brethren" (my fellow-men) "have dealt deceitfully" (have sinned) "as a brook, and as the stream of brooks they pass away.
16. Which are blackish by reason of the ice, and wherein the snow is hid.
"17. What time they wax warm, they vanish: when it is hot, they are consumed out of their place.
18. The paths of their way are turned aside; they go to nothing and perish."
The Douay version has it:
"16. They" (the people) "that fear the hoary frost, the snow shall fall upon them.
"17. At the time when they shall be scattered they shall perish; and after it groweth hot they shall be melted out of their place.
"18. The paths of their steps are entangled; they shall walk in vain and shall perish."
There is a great deal of perishing here--some by frost and snow, some by heat; the people are scattered, they lose their way, they perish.
{p. 289}
Job's servants and sheep were also consumed in their place; they came to naught, they perished.
Job begins to think, like the Aztec priest, that possibly the human race has reached its limit and is doomed to annihilation (chap. vii):
"1. Is there not an appointed time to man upon earth? Are not his days also like the days of an hireling?"
Is it not time to discharge the race from its labors?
"4. When I lie down, I say, When shall I arise, and the night be gone? and I am full of tossings to and fro unto the dawning of the day."
He draws a picture of his hopeless condition, shut up in the cavern, never to see the light of day again. (Douay ver., chap. vii):
"12: Am I sea or a whale, that thou hast inclosed me in a prison?"
"7. My eyes shall not return to see good things.
"8. Nor shall the sight of man behold me; thy eyes are upon me, and I shall be no more"; (or, as one translates it, thy mercy shall come too late when I shall be no more.)
"9. As a cloud is consumed and passeth away, so he that shall go down to hell" (or the grave, the cavern) shall not come up.
"10. Nor shall he return any more into his house, neither shall his place know him any more."
How strikingly does this remind one of the Druid legend, given on page 135, ante:
"The profligacy of mankind had provoked the Great Supreme to send a pestilential wind upon the earth. A pure poison descended, every blast was death. At this time the patriarch, distinguished for his integrity, was shut up, together with his select company, in the inclosure with the strong door. Here the just ones were safe from injury. Presently a tempest of fire arose," etc.
{p. 290}
Who can doubt that these widely separated legends refer to the same event and the same patriarch?
Job meditates suicide, just as we have seen in the American legends that hundreds slew themselves under the terror of the time:
"21. For now shall I sleep in the dust; and thou shalt seek me in the morning, but I shall not be."
The Chaldaic version gives us the sixteenth and seventeenth verses of chapter viii as follows:
"The sun is no sooner risen with a burning heat but it withereth the grass, and the flower thereof faileth, and the grace of the fashion of it perisheth, so also shall the rich man fade away in his ways."
And then Job refers to the power of God, seeming to paint the cataclysm (chap. ix):
"5. Which removeth the mountains, and they know not which overturneth them in his anger.
"6. Which shaketh the earth out of her place, and the pillars thereof tremble.
"7. Which commandeth the sun, and it riseth not; and sealeth up the stars.
"8. Which alone spreadeth out the heavens and treadeth upon the waves of the sea."
All this is most remarkable: here is the delineation of a great catastrophe--the mountains are removed and leveled; the earth shakes to its foundations; the sun fails to appear, and the stars are sealed up. How? In the dense masses of clouds?
Surely this does not describe the ordinary manifestations of God's power. When has the sun refused to rise? It can not refer to the story of Joshua, for in that case the sun was in the heavens and refrained from setting; and Joshua's time was long subsequent to that of Job. But when we take this in connection with the fire
{p. 291}
falling from heaven, the great wind, the destruction of men and animals, the darkness that came at midday, the ice and snow and sands of the sea, and the stones of the field, and the fact that Job is shut up as in a prison, never to return to his home or to the light of day, we see that peering through the little-understood context of this most ancient poem are the disjointed reminiscences of the age of fire and gravel. It sounds like the cry not of a man but of a race, a great, religious, civilized race, who could not understand how God could so cruelly visit the world; and out of their misery and their terror sent up this pitiful yet sublime appeal for mercy.
"13. If God will not withdraw his anger, the proud helpers do stoop under him."
One commentator makes this read:
"Under him the whales below heaven bend," (the crooked leviathan?)
"17. For he shall crush me in a whirlwind, and multiplieth my wounds even without cause." (Douay ver.)
And Job can not recognize the doctrine of a special providence; he says:
"22. This is one thing" (therefore I said it). "He destroyeth the perfect and the wicked.
"23. If the scourge slay suddenly, he will laugh at the trial of the innocent.
"24. The earth is given into the hands of the wicked: he covereth the faces of the judges thereof; if it be not him, who is it then?" (Douay ver.)
That is to say, God has given up the earth to the power of Satan (as appears by chapter i); good and bad perish together; and the evil one laughs as the scourge (the comet) slays suddenly the innocent ones; the very judges who should have enforced justice are dead, and
{p. 292}
their faces covered with dust and ashes. And if God has not done this terrible deed, who has done it?
And Job rebels against such a state of things
"34. Let him take his rod away from me, and let not his fear terrify me.
"35. Then I would speak to him and not fear him but it is not so with me."
What rod--what fear? Surely not the mere physical affliction which is popularly supposed to have constituted Job's chief grievance. Is the "rod" that terrifies Job so that he fears to speak, that great object which cleft the heavens; that curved wolf-jaw of the Goths, one end of which rested on the earth while the other touched the sun? Is it the great sword of Surt?
And here we have another (chap. x) allusion to the "darkness," although in our version it is applied to death:
"21. Before I go whence I shall not return, even to the land of darkness and the shadow of death.
"22. A land of darkness as darkness itself, and of the shadow of death, without any order, and where the light is as darkness."
Or, as the Douay version has it:
"21. Before I go, and return no more, to a land that is dark and covered with the mist of death.
"22. A land of misery and darkness, where the shadow of death, and no order but everlasting horror dwelleth."
This is not death; death is a place of peace, "where the wicked ceased from troubling "; this is a description of the chaotic condition of things on the earth outside the cave, "without any order," and where even the feeble light of day is little better than total darkness. Job thinks he might just as well go out into this dreadful world and end it all.
Zophar argues (chap. xi) that all these things have
{p. 293}
come because of the wickedness of the people, and that it is all right:
"10. If he cut off and shut up and gather together, who can hinder him?
"11. For he knoweth vain men: he seeth wickedness also; will he not then consider it?
"If he cut off," the commentators say, means literally, "If he pass by as a storm."
That is to say, if he cuts off the people, (kills them by the million,) and shuts up a few in caves, as Job was shut up in prison, gathered together from the storm, how are you going to help it? Hath he not seen the vanity and wickedness of man?
And Zophar tells Job to hope, to pray to God, and that he will yet escape:
"16. Because thou shalt forget thy misery, and remember it as waters that pass away.
"17. And thine age shall be clearer than the noonday; thou shalt shine forth, thou shalt be as the morning."
"Thou shalt shine forth" Gesenius renders, "though now thou art in darkness thou shalt presently be as the morning"; that is, the storm will pass and the light return. Umbreit gives it, "Thy darkness shall be as the morning; only the darkness of morning twilight, not nocturnal darkness." That is, Job will return to that dim light which followed the Drift Age.
"18. And thou shalt be secure, because there is hope; yea, thou shalt dig about thee, and thou shalt take thy rest in safety."
That is to say, when the waters pass away, with them shall pass away thy miseries; the sun shall yet return brighter than ever; thou shalt be secure; thou shalt dig thy way out of these caverns; and then take thy rest in
{p. 294}
safety, for the great tempest shall have passed for ever. We are told by the commentators that the words "about thee" are an interpolation.
If this is not the interpretation, for what would Job dig about him? What relation can digging have with the disease which afflicted Job?
But Job refuses to receive this consolation. He refuses to believe that the tower of Siloam fell only on the wickedest men in the city. He refers to his past experience of mankind. He thinks honest poverty is without honor at the hands of successful fraud. He says (chap. xii):
"5. He that is ready to slip with his feet is as a lamp despised in the thought of him that is at ease."
But--
"6. The tabernacles of robbers prosper, and they that provoke God are secure; into whose hand God bringeth abundantly."
And he can not see how, if this calamity has come upon men for their sins, that the innocent birds and beasts, and even the fish in the heated and poisoned waters, are perishing:
"7. But ask now the beasts," ("for verily," he has just said, "ye are the men, and wisdom will die with you,") "and they shall teach thee; and the fowls of the air, and they shall tell thee:
"8. Or speak to the earth, and it shall teach thee: and the fishes of the sea shall declare it unto thee.
"9. Who knoweth not in all these that the hand of the Lord hath wrought this?"
Wrought what? Job's disease? No. Some great catastrophe to bird and beast and earth.
You pretend, he says, in effect, ye wise men, that only the wicked have suffered; but it is not so, for aforetime I have seen the honest poor man despised and the villain
{p. 295}
prosperous. And if the sins of men have brought this catastrophe on the earth, go ask the beasts and the birds and the fish and the very face of the suffering earth, what they have done to provoke this wrath. No, it is the work of God, and of God alone, and he gives and will give no reason for it.
"14. Behold, he breaketh down, and it cannot be built up again; he shutteth up a man, and there can be no opening.
"15. Behold, he withholdeth the waters, and they dry up: also, he sendeth them out, and they overturn the earth."
That is to say, the heat of the fire from heaven sucks up the waters until rivers and lakes are dried up: Cacus steals the cows of Hercules; and then again they fall, deluging and overturning the earth, piling it into Mountains in one place, says the Tupi legend, and digging out valleys in another. And God buries men in the caves in which they sought shelter.
"23. He increaseth the nations, and destroyeth them: he enlargeth the nations, and straiteneth them again.
"24. He taketh away the heart of the chief of the people of the earth, and causeth them to wander in a wilderness where there is no way.
"25. They grope in the dark without light, and he maketh them to stagger like a drunken man."
More darkness, more groping in the dark, more of that staggering like drunken men, described in the American legends:
"Lo, mine eye," says Job, (xiii, 1,) "hath seen all this, mine ear hath heard and understood it. What ye know, the same do I know also."
We have all seen it, says Job, and now you would come here with your platitudes about God sending all this to punish the wicked:
{p. 296}
"4. But ye are forgers of lies, ye are all physicians of no value."
Honest Job is disgusted, and denounces his counselors with Carlylean vigor:
"11. Shall not his excellency make you afraid? and his dread fall upon you?
"12. Your remembrances are like unto ashes, your bodies to bodies of clay.
"13. Hold your peace, let me alone, that I may speak, and let come on me what will.
"14. Wherefore do I take my flesh in my teeth, and put my life in mine hand?
"15. Though he slay me, yet will I trust in him: but I will maintain mine own ways before him."
In other words, I don't think this thing is right, and, though I tear my flesh with my teeth, and contemplate suicide, and though I may be slain for speaking, yet I will speak out, and maintain that God ought not to have done this thing; he ought not to have sent this horrible affliction on the earth--this fire from heaven, which burned up my cattle; this whirlwind which slew my children; this sand of the sea; this rush of floods; this darkness in noonday in which mankind grope helplessly; these arrows, this poison, this rush of waters, this sweeping away of mountains.
"If I hold my tongue," says Job, "I shall give up the ghost!"
Job believes--
"The grief that will not speak,
Whispers the o'erfraught heart, and bids it break."
"As the waters fail from the sea," says Job, (xiv, 11,) and the flood decayeth and drieth up:
"12. So man lieth down, and riseth not: till the heavens be no more, they shall not awake, nor be raised out of their sleep.
{p. 297}
13. O that thou wouldest hide me in the grave, that thou wouldest keep me secret, until thy wrath be past, that thou wouldest appoint me a set time, and remember me!"
What does this mean? When in history have the waters failed from the sea? Job believes in the immortality of the soul (xix, 26): "Though worms destroy this body, yet in my flesh shall I see God." Can these words then be of general application, and mean that those who lie down and rise not shall not awake for ever? No; he is simply telling that when the conflagration came and dried up the seas, it slaughtered the people by the million; they fell and perished, never to live again; and he calls on God to hide him in a grave, a tomb, a cavern--until the day of his wrath be past, and then to remember him, to come for him, to let him out.
"20. My bone cleaveth to my skin and to my flesh, and I am escaped with the skin of my teeth."
Escaped from what? From his physical disease? No; he carried that with him.
But Zophar insists that there is a special providence in all these things, and that only the wicked have perished (chap. xx):
"5. The triumphing of the wicked is short, and the joy of the hypocrite but for a moment."
"7. Yet he shall perish for ever like his own dung: they which have seen him shall say, Where is be?"
16. He shall suck the poison of asps: the viper's tongue shall slay him."
How?
"23. When he is about to fill his belly, God shall cast the fury of his wrath upon him, and shall RAIN IT UPON him, while he is eating.
"24. He shall flee from the iron weapon, and the bow of steel shall strike him through.
{p. 298}
"25. It is drawn and cometh out of the body; yea, the glittering sword" (the comet?) "cometh out of his gall: terrors are upon him.
"26. All darkness shall be hid in his secret places: a fire not blown shall consume him. . . .
"27. The heavens shall reveal his iniquity; and the earth shall rise up against him.
"28. The increase of his house shall depart, and his goods shall flow away in the day of his wrath."
What does all this mean? While the rich man, (necessarily a wicked man,) is eating his dinner, God shall rain upon him a consuming fire, a fire not blown by man; he shall be pierced by the arrows of God, the earth shall quake under his feet, the heavens shall blaze forth his iniquity; the darkness shall be hid, shall disappear, in the glare of the conflagration; and his substance shall flow away in the floods of God's wrath.
Job answers him in powerful language, maintaining from past experience his position that the wicked ones do not suffer in this life any more than the virtuous (chap. xxi):
"Their houses are safe from fear, neither is the rod of God upon them. Their bull gendereth, and faileth not; their cow calveth, and casteth not her calf. They send forth their little ones like a flock, and their children dance. They spend their days in wealth, and in a moment go down to the grave. Therefore they say unto God, Depart from us; for we desire not the knowledge of... [i]continue

On Propaganda: Sublime Book of Knowledge

The following is an excerpt of the Sublime Book of Knowledge, p.147. Anyone you encounter who questions the validity of the history you have been providing, discards it as "conspiracy theory," and subjects your ideas to the same group as the "reptilian lizard people" is wholly ignorant of true history. This is de facto propaganda exemplified by the person's reaction. Quigley states in the same book, "Beyond the academic field, the Milner Group engaged in journalistic activities that sought to influence public opinion in directions which the Group desired. One of the earliest examples of this, and one of the few occasions on which the Group appeared as a group in the public eye, was in 1905, the year in which Milner returned from Africa. At that time the Group published a volume, The Empire and the Century, consisting of fifty articles on various aspects of the imperial problem.

The majority of these articles were written by members of the Milner Group..." To further show how reality was manipulated in the past just as it is today, Quigley states, "The second important propaganda effort of the Milner Group in the period after 1909 was The Round Table. This was part of an effort by the circle of the Milner Group to accomplish for the whole Empire what they had just done for South Africa." For further specific details, read the Anglo-American Establishment. As said by Burrhus Frederic Skinner, American psychologist, altering an individual's behavior can be done so by modifying his environment. Indoctrination works the same way, howbeit, the alteration must be consistent and long lasting. Only in this manner can a new born baby enter this bubble, i.e., Plato's cave, without conceptualizing of a world outside of its own. It will seek solutions and answers to its questions within this matrix. Questions of "who are we, where did we come from, and where are we going." The child is not alerted by her parents as a result of her parents being more indoctrinated than she. The parents cannot see, touch, taste, or smell the veil that has been put over their eyes. The longer through childhood she stays "asleep," the more copious the ill effects will be. The first six years of one's life has a great imprinting effect. The term most is not used in this context for we do not know of the psychological effects upon Man if he were to live one thousand years in one lifetime. After the first six years, a second layer of her personality develops, and if this too is tainted with the system's indoctrination, it will be harder for her to undo the programming. From the age of twelve to twenty one, the individual experiences bursts of introspective moments and phases of change. This time serves great potency of hope — it allows extra chances to realize the truth.

Past a certain age, the individual must perform the task of realization on his own. It will be tougher if he has not been exposed to the Truths earlier in life. Governed development, i.e., indoctrination, harps the message of progress. It is of this nature that people can be easily swayed. The need for a better way of living is exploited by technological advancements, outlined by marketers of corporations, and fed to the people. The system inflicts the poison and administers the antidote. By means of this feedback mechanism, synthesis generates. The thing that hath been, it is that which shall be; and that which is done is that which shall be done: and there is no new thing under the sun (Ecclesiastes 1:9).

By means of intellectual inference, we can know ancient technology existed far superior to what we have today; society is a stream of change, changing, shaped, and exploited, just as how every decade recessions occur for the profit of the industrialists. The world we live in is finely managed. The guides of evolution know, for example, that public opinion is a swift titan, capable of recourse in quick movements. They also know that the public do not remember publicized events very clearly. Man today only holds a diminutive remembrance of yesterday, a very dismal truth undoubtedly. Asking an individual, we would find his summary of the past by the events that have penetrated his mind by constant, global repetition. It is global in the sense that he is bombarded of the same message in many mediums. These events would most likely include only the recent presidential election, the most recent events on the news, and an iconoclastic moment, such as "nine eleven" shaking the feeling of security. Ask an individual of history twenty, ten, five, or one year ago and he will only be able to recall few. It's so considering he is not studying the news, but is merely being downloaded with infor- mation. Likely, he becomes less capable of noticing inconsistencies in facts. That is why he can be told of global warming yesterday, and global dimming today; or, he is told about the Rockefeller mining incidents, coal wars, and is against it one day, but is brainwashed with a perspective one-hundred eighty degrees in the other direction the next day, turning him into a protagonist (this has happened).

These types of events occur in timely fashion, that is, in proper context. Men of today would not be interested in disputes of religion, but would be inclined to dispute the effectiveness of technology. Though the technology could have existed thousands of years ago, such as genetic engineering, he finds this to be a contemporary issue, therefore, it is of his business to debate. News, like many forms of media, is effective not because it is based on reality, though, by reason of interpreting objective reality. The death of a celebrity, a star (rats backwards and can form the word Rasta from the Rastafari movement), is an objective fact. It is of no importance to the individual until the media publicizes it to be otherwise. The weight of concern is equated to a formula of how many people view the media, how many times it is viewed, and for what duration. A low output of the given formula arises what is defined as "local news," and a high output arises what is defined as "global (breaking) news," e.g., nine eleven. Facts are not always used as benign agencies of support for an individual's thesis. The truthfulness of facts, since interpreted, is vitiated. Not one spectrum is impervious; political, sociological, economic, and scientific branches of information and perception are the most penetrated. The deliberate misperceptions from the political sphere are one of the most noted forms of propaganda. Next in line is economic, then scientific, and rarely sociological. Brainwashing within the economic realm is most perceptible under the guise of corruption, e.g., history of banks across the globe. Scientific disputes arise usually from one of these categories: (1) intentional disputes for the purpose of dialectic creation, (2) known re-searchers having a clash of ideologies, and (3) manipulation through dissemination of public opinion concerning scientific conclusions. In the second option, known researchers were mentioned because they are backed by financiers. This means they are directly part of the media; the ones whom are part of the media are the well-known scientists (or re-searchers, "re" implies the search has already been done) such as Galileo, Newton, Franklin, Watt, Ohm, Kelvin, Pascal, Einstein, Benz, da Vinci, Faraday, Bacon, Kepler, Maxwell, Hubble, Plank, Aristotle and a host of other members of occult orders such as Bohr and Copernicus. Yes, many well-known "enlightened men" were part of secret societies: Francis Bacon, Voltaire, and Descarte just to name a few.

What makes the hitherto mentioned truths feasible is precisely the structure of society. It relies upon society being of a mass and of individuals. To abbreviate, a mass society of seemingly equal individuals is obligate. The efficacy here is contingent to the density of the population, or the perception of the population. For mass brainwashing into this hive mind to be properly successful, man must believe he is surrounded by others. The theme of overpopulation, its validity aside, stimulates the effects of propaganda. Grid structures, i.e., cities, are perfect at submerging the individual within the crowd, for there exists explicit and implicit sociopsychological tendencies within crowds. To purchase a newspaper, watch television, or to listen to the radio implicitly drives the confirmation of "togetherness." A considerable majority of the populous lives on limited funds. Very few people have savings that enable them to live one year without work, and even less people are able to have savings to allow them to live without work for two or more years. Yet, via propaganda, particularly geared towards socioeconomic success — actuated by drives of sex, power, and security — people purge the reality of their financial constraints. This destines man further enslavement.

A child receiving a toy replicating an exotic car may seem harmless, yet this object is a psychological anchor, programming the parents, typically the father, by reminding and evoking the associated ideas and dogmas of socioeconomic success. The man who spends the great majority of his monthly paycheck to sustain payments of his exotic car is not only hurting himself, he is hurting others from the psychological anchor this stimulates onto society through the external world. There are disparate types of classes within today's society, markedly variable, contingent to relative time. Traditionally, it is the poor, middle class, and wealthy. In today's age, all are susceptible to propaganda, and to distinct categories. The poor today can afford a basic t.v. and radio. And, if not, they are submerged to it from the urban life, whether directly or indirectly. The middle class are susceptible to two constraints of propaganda, the need to ascend, and the fear of descent, eminently of the economic nature. The propagandistic setting of the middle class is the impetus that strengthens the binding force of class struggle and gratification of egos as well as its exploitation. On the next following pages are examples of propaganda and corruption in the recent eras…Continuation: → page 151, Sublime Book of Knowledge.

"In my fable of Brave New World, the dictators had added science to the list and thus were able to enforce their authority by manipulating the bodies of embryos, the reflexes of infants and the minds of children and adults. And, instead of merely talking about miracles and hinting symbolically at mysteries, they were able, by means of drugs, to give their subjects the direct experience of mysteries and miracles -- to transform mere faith into ecstatic knowledge. The older dictators fell because they could never supply their subjects with enough bread, enough circuses, enough miracles and mysteries. Nor did they possess a really effective system of mind-manipulation. In the past, free-thinkers and revolutionaries were often the products of the most piously orthodox education. This is not surprising. The methods employed by orthodox educators were and still are extremely inefficient. Under a scientific dictator education will really work -- with the result that most men and women will grow up to love their servitude and will never dream of revolution. There seems to be no good reason why a thoroughly scientific dictatorship should ever be overthrown." - Brave New World Revisited, Aldous Huxley; 1958
Soma (1) -  Carisoprodol

Carisoprodol, a muscle relaxant, is used with rest, physical therapy, and other measures to relax muscles and relieve pain and discomfort caused by strains, sprains, and other muscle injuries.

Soma (2)

A psychoactive drug used to numb the mind and remove mental discomfort caused by perpetual slavery.

Soma (Sanskrit सोम sóma), or Haoma (Avestan), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *sauma-, was a ritual drink of importance among the early Indo-Iranians, and the subsequent Vedic and greater Persian cultures. It is frequently mentioned in the Rigveda, whose Soma Mandala contains 114 hymns, many praising its energizing qualities. In the Avesta, Haoma has the entire Yašt 20 and Yasna 9-11 dedicated to it.

There appears to be a slight confusion in the use of this name . The Soma juice was the liquid which Indra imbibed with so much fondness, and to which allusion is often made in the Yedic hymns, and it is also the name of the god of the moon. Soma means extract, and was applied to the juice of Asckpias ascida, a plant of the same family with our common milkweed. The ancient Hindoos accorded remarkable virtaes to this juice, believing that it produced a kind of frenzy or divine afflatus, imparting godlike strength. The plant was called the moon-plant, and the juice was raised to the rank of a god; hence, probably, the same name was applied to the moon. The hymns to Soma pccupy an entire book in the Veda . Here is a translation of one of them"

he fermented juice of the moon-plant gave an exhilarating excitement to those who drank it It was offered to the gods in ladles, or thrown into the fire . It was thought also to work miracles, and hence it became easy to worship it as a god, and it was said of him that he was powerful enough to conquer every one . It is curious that the Soma, which is offered to Indra in sacrifice, and which he drinks with the avidity of a confirmed toper, is itself celebrated as a god of very considerable powers. Soma is regarded as a mediator between gods and men, especially between men and Indra . He is entreated to go to Indra; to flow around him, and thus conciliate and delight him. But Soma can confer benefits independently. One poet implores him to stream forth blessings on the ox, the man, and the horse, "and, ,0 king, blessings on plants."
At the centennial celebration of the Grand Lodge of England, by which G. L. a regulated Lodge government, a Constitution regulating Grand Masters and Grand Officers, and the basis of English Masonry, according to the English Constitutions, was first agreed on July 2, 1717, the three Lodges of Dresden—The Three Swords, The Golden Apple and Astrea—assembled under the orders of the Grand Lodge of Saxony, to celebrate the commemoration of that event. On this occasion a medal was struck by the mint engraver, Kruger, at Dresden, of which but a few copies in silver, bronze and plaster of Paris, were made and distributed .amongt a few Lodges.

On the front side is a Globe overlying the three Grand Lights—the Phoenix of Masonry, its head surrounded by rays —for only once in a century does this miraculous bird of antiquity return, and it aforetime was used under the Roman Emperors to signalize grand secular celebrations. It stands on the Grand Invisible Lodge that stands on the Globe now, where a century hence will spread over the whole surface. The inscription (omitted in our copy) is in German. "A second Phoenix, encircling the globe, rises every century, out of the three lights of Masonry." On the reverse are three lines from an effusion by Bros. Von Nostitz and Fanckendorf, late Grand Masters of the G. L. of Saxony, the burden of which is, " That the holy, save itself, undivided and uninjured, shall bind east to east in sacred chain." The fraternal chain is expressed by a border of grasped hands and close love-knots.

Americium 432

Americium is a synthetic element that has the symbol Am and atomic number 95. This transuranic element of the actinide series is located in the periodic table below the lanthanide element europium, and thus by analogy was named after another continent, America. mericium was first produced in 1944 by the group of Glenn T. Seaborg at the University of California, Berkeley. Although it is the third element in the transuranic series, it was discovered fourth, after the heavier curium. The discovery was kept secret and only released to the public in November 1945. Most americium is produced by bombarding uranium or plutonium with alpha particles in nuclear reactors – one tonne of spent nuclear fuel contains about 100 grams of americium. It is widely used in commercial ionization chamber smoke detectors, as well as in neutron sources and industrial gauges. Several unusual applications, such as a nuclear battery or fuel for space ships with nuclear propulsion, have been proposed for the isotope 242mAm, but they are as yet hindered by the scarcity and high price of this nuclear isomer.

Americium is a relatively soft radioactive metal with silvery-white appearance. Its most common isotopes are 241Am and 243Am. In chemical compounds, they usually assume the oxidation state +3, especially in solutions. Several other oxidation states are known, which range from +2 to +7 and can be identified via their characteristic optical absorption spectra. The crystal lattice of solid americium and its compounds contains intrinsic defects, which are induced by self-irradiation with alpha particles and accumulate with time; this results in a drift of some material properties.

lthough americium was likely produced in previous nuclear experiments, it was first intentionally synthesized, isolated and identified in late autumn 1944, at the University of California, Berkeley by Glenn T. Seaborg, Leon O. Morgan, Ralph A. James, and Albert Ghiorso. They used a 60-inch cyclotron at the University of California, Berkeley.[4] The element was chemically identified at the Metallurgical Laboratory (now Argonne National Laboratory) of the University of Chicago. Following the lighter neptunium, plutonium, and heavier curium, americium was the fourth transuranium element to be discovered. At the time, the periodic table had been restructured by Seaborg to its present layout, containing the actinide row below the lanthanide one. This led to americium being located right below its twin lanthanide element europium; it was thus by analogy named after another continent, America: "The name americium (after the Americas) and the symbol Am are suggested for the element on the basis of its position as the sixth member of the actinide rare-earth series, analogous to europium, Eu, of the lanthanide series."

The new element was isolated from its oxides in a complex, multi-step process. First plutonium-239 nitrate (239PuNO3) solution was coated on a platinum foil of about 0.5 cm2 area, the solution was evaporated and the residue was converted into plutonium dioxide (PuO2) by annealing. After cyclotron irradiation, the coating was dissolved with nitric acid, and then precipitated as the hydroxide using concentrated aqueous ammonia solution. The residue was dissolved in perchloric acid. Further separation was carried out by ion exchange, yielding a certain isotope of curium. The separation of curium and americium was so painstaking that those elements were initially called by the Berkeley group as pandemonium (from Greek for all demons or hell) and delirium (from Latin for madness).

Initial experiments yielded four americium isotopes: 241Am, 242Am, 239Am and 238Am. Americium-241 was directly obtained from plutonium upon absorption of one neutron. It decays by emission of a α-particle to 237Np; the half-life of this decay was first determined as 510 ± 20 years but then corrected to 432.2 years.

The longest-lived and most common isotopes of americium, 241Am and 243Am, have half-lives of 432.2 and 7,370 years, respectively. Therefore, all primordial americium (americium that was present on Earth during its formation) should have decayed by now. Existing americium is concentrated in the areas used for the atmospheric nuclear weapons tests conducted between 1945 and 1980, as well as at the sites of nuclear incidents, such as Chernobyl disaster. For example, the analysis of the debris at the testing site of the first U.S. hydrogen bomb, Ivy Mike, (November 1, 1952, Enewetak Atoll), revealed high concentrations of various actinides including americium. Due to military secrecy, this result was published only in 1956. Elevated levels of americium were also detected at the crash site of a US B-52 bomber, which carried four hydrogen bombs, in 1968 in Greenland.

"If one tunes a musical instrument to a C note of 256Hz (binary), as the Greeks and pre-Asian Indian and Persian people once did… it is quite easy to create music out of anything that vibrates at all. This would give us a ‘concert pitch’ A note of 432Hz – an octave of that interesting 216, as well as 108 (like the amount of beads on a mala or rosary), 54 (the eclipse cycle) and even 27 (a ‘lucky’ number in Western society, and bead count on a wrist mala).
Corroborative Evidence supporting Autism-Mercur...

Autism, a member of the pervasive developmental disorders (PDDs), has been increasing dramatically since its description by Leo Kanner in 1943. First estimated to occur in 4 to 5 per 10,000 children, the incidence of autism is now 1 per 110 in the United States, and 1 per 64 in the United Kingdom, with similar incidences throughout the world. Searching information from 1943 to the present in PubMed and Ovid Medline databases, this review summarizes results that correlate the timing of changes in incidence with environmental changes. Autism could result from more than one cause, with different manifestations in different individuals that share common symptoms. Documented causes of autism include genetic mutations and/or deletions, viral infections, and encephalitis following vaccination. Therefore, autism is the result of genetic defects and/or inflammation of the brain. The inflammation could be caused by a defective placenta, immature blood-brain barrier, the immune response of the mother to infection while pregnant, a premature birth, encephalitis in the child after birth, or a toxic environment.
Lasting neuropathological changes in rat brain after intermittent neonatal administration of thimerosal.

Thimerosal, an organomercurial added as a preservative to some vaccines, is a suspected iatrogenic factor, possibly contributing to paediatric neurodevelopmental disorders including autism. We examined the effects of early postnatal administration of thimerosal (four i.m. injections, 12 or 240 μg THIM-Hg/kg, on postnatal days 7, 9, 11 and 15) on brain pathology in Wistar rats. Numerous neuropathological changes were observed in young adult rats which were treated postnatally with thimerosal. They included: ischaemic degeneration of neurons and "dark" neurons in the prefrontal and temporal cortex, the hippocampus and the cerebellum, pathological changes of the blood vessels in the temporal cortex, diminished synaptophysin reaction in the hippocampus, atrophy of astroglia in the hippocampus and cerebellum, and positive caspase-3 reaction in Bergmann astroglia. These findings document neurotoxic effects of thimerosal, at doses equivalent to those used in infant vaccines or higher, in developing rat brain, suggesting likely involvement of this mercurial in neurodevelopmental disorders.
Integrating Experimental (In Vitro and In Vivo) Neurotoxicity Studies of Low-dose Thimerosal Relevant to Vaccines

There is a need to interpret neurotoxic studies to help deal with uncertainties surrounding pregnant mothers, newborns and young children who must receive repeated doses of Thimerosal-containing vaccines (TCVs). This review integrates information derived from emerging experimental studies (in vitro and in vivo) of low-dose Thimerosal (sodium ethyl mercury thiosalicylate). Major databases (PubMed and Web-of-science) were searched for in vitro and in vivo experimental studies that addressed the effects of low-dose Thimerosal (or ethylmercury) on neural tissues and animal behaviour. Information extracted from studies indicates that: (a) activity of low doses of Thimerosal against isolated human and animal brain cells was found in all studies and is consistent with Hg neurotoxicity; (b) the neurotoxic effect of ethylmercury has not been studied with co-occurring adjuvant-Al in TCVs; © animal studies have shown that exposure to Thimerosal-Hg can lead to accumulation of inorganic Hg in brain, and that (d) doses relevant to TCV exposure possess the potential to affect human neuro-development. Thimerosal at concentrations relevant for infants’ exposure (in vaccines) is toxic to cultured human-brain cells and to laboratory animals. The persisting use of TCV (in developing countries) is counterintuitive to global efforts to lower Hg exposure and to ban Hg in medical products; its continued use in TCV requires evaluation of a sufficiently nontoxic level of ethylmercury compatible with repeated exposure (co-occurring with adjuvant-Al) during early life.

"BINGO, we have a winner! The original *QUESTION* posed that led to the invention of Onion Routing was, "Can we build a system that allows for bi-directional communications over the Internet where the source and destination cannot be determined by a mid-point?" The *PURPOSE* was for DoD / Intelligence usage (open source intelligence gathering, covering of forward deployed assets, whatever). Not helping dissidents in repressive countries. Not assisting criminals in covering their electronic tracks. Not helping bit-torrent users avoid MPAA/RIAA prosecution. Not giving a 10 year old a way to bypass an anti-porn filter. Of course, we knew those would be other unavoidable uses for the technology, but that was immaterial to the problem at hand we were trying to solve (and if those uses were going to give us more cover traffic to better hide what we wanted to use the network for, all the better...I once told a flag officer that much to his chagrin). I should know, I was the recipient of that question from David, and Paul was brought into the mix a few days later after I had sketched out a basic (flawed) design for the original Onion Routing."

Jewel v. NSA (Illegal Spying)

In Jewel v. NSA, EFF is suing the NSA and other government agencies on behalf of AT&T customers to stop the illegal, unconstitutional, and ongoing dragnet surveillance of their communications and communications records.

Jewel v. NSA is aimed at ending the NSA’s dragnet surveillance of millions of ordinary Americans and holding accountable the government officials who illegally authorized it. Evidence in the case includes undisputed documents provided by former AT&T telecommunications technician Mark Klein showing AT&T has routed copies of Internet traffic to a secret room in San Francisco controlled by the NSA. That same evidence is central to Hepting v. AT&T, a class-action lawsuit filed by EFF in 2006 to stop the telecom giant’s participation in the illegal surveillance program.

In addition to suing the government agencies involved in the domestic dragnet, Jewel v. NSA also targets the individuals responsible for creating, authorizing, and implementing the illegal program, including former President George W. Bush, former Vice President Dick Cheney, Cheney’s former chief of staff David Addington, former Attorney General and White House Counsel Alberto Gonzales, and other individuals who ordered or participated in the warrantless domestic surveillance.

In April, the Obama administration moved to dismiss Jewel, claiming that litigation over the wiretapping program would require the government to disclose privileged "state secrets,” and that they were immune from suit. These are essentially the same or worse arguments than those made by the Bush administration when it first set out to dismiss EFF’s case against the AT&T back in 2006. On July 15, 2009, the court heard arguments on the government's motion to dismiss Jewel.

Download case document

The U.S. government, with assistance from major telecommunications carriers including AT&T, has engaged in a massive program of illegal dragnet surveillance of domestic communications and communications records of millions of ordinary Americans since at least 2001.

News reports in December 2005 first revealed that the National Security Agency (NSA) has been intercepting Americans’ phone calls and Internet communications. Those news reports, plus a USA Today story in May 2006 and the statements of several members of Congress, revealed that the NSA is also receiving wholesale copies of their telephone and other communications records. All of these surveillance activities are in violation of the privacy safeguards established by Congress and the U.S. Constitution.

The evidence also shows that the government did not act alone. EFF has obtained whistleblower evidence [PDF] from former AT&T technician Mark Klein showing that AT&T is cooperating with the illegal surveillance. The undisputed documents show that AT&T installed a fiberoptic splitter at its facility at 611 Folsom Street in San Francisco that makes copies of all emails, web browsing, and other Internet traffic to and from AT&T customers, and provides those copies to the NSA. This copying includes both domestic and international Internet activities of AT&T customers. As one expert observed, “this isn’t a wiretap, it’s a country-tap.”

EFF is fighting these illegal activities on multiple fronts. In Hepting v. AT&T, EFF filed the first case against a telecom for violating its customers' privacy. In addition, EFF is representing victims of the illegal surveillance program in Jewel v. NSA, a lawsuit filed in September 2008 against the government seeking to stop the warrantless wiretapping and hold the government officials behind the program accountable.

EFF is not alone in this fight. There are multiple cases challenging various parts of the illegal surveillance against both the telecoms and the government. This page collects information on EFF's cases as well as cases brought by individuals, the American Civil Liberties Union of Northern California and of Illinois, the Center for Constitutional Rights, and others.

Genetically Modified Humans and their Cognitive...

The understanding of the title of this article implies the understanding of esoteric history.

Moral of the story: Expect people to shut their reasoning down when confronted with dissonant information.

"Research on political judgment and decision-making has converged with decades of research in clinical and social psychology suggesting the ubiquity of emotion-biased motivated reasoning. Motivated reasoning is a form of implicit emotion regulation in which the brain converges on judgments that minimize negative and maximize positive affect states associated with threat to or attainment of motives. To what extent motivated reasoning engages neural circuits involved in ‘‘cold’’ reasoning and conscious emotion regulation (e.g., suppression) is, however, unknown. We used functional neuroimaging to study the neural responses of 30 committed partisans during the U.S. Presidential election of 2004.

We presented subjects with reasoning tasks involving judgments about information threatening to their own candidate, the opposing candidate, or neutral control targets. Motivated reasoning was associated with activations of the ventromedial prefrontal cortex, anterior cingulate cortex, posterior cingulate cortex, insular cortex, and lateral orbital cortex. As predicted, motivated reasoning was not associated with neural activity in regions previously linked to cold reasoning tasks and conscious (explicit) emotion regulation. The findings provide the first neuroimaging evidence for phenomena variously described as motivated reasoning, implicit emotion regulation, and psychological defense. They suggest that motivated reasoning is qualitatively distinct from reasoning when people do not have a strong emotional stake in the conclusions reached." (From PMID: 17069484)

Brief Conclusions:

"Consistent with prior studies of partisan biases and motivated reasoning, when confronted with information about their candidate that would logically lead them to an emotionally aversive conclusion, partisans arrived at an alternative conclusion. This process was not associated with differential activation of the DLPFC, as in studies of ‘‘cold’’ reasoning and explicit emotion regulation (suppression). Rather, it was associated with activations in the lateral and medial orbital PFC, ACC, insula, and the posterior cingulate and contiguous precuneus and parietal cortex. Neural information processing related to motivated reasoning appears to be qualitatively different from reasoning in the absence
of a strong emotional stake in the conclusions reached."

Ventromedial Cortex
The ventromedial prefrontal cortex is a part of the prefrontal cortex in the mammalian brain. The ventral medial prefrontal is located in the frontal lobe and is implicated in the processing of risk, fear, and in decision making. As of yet, functional differences between the orbitofrontal and ventromedial areas of the pre-frontal cortex are not clearly established, although the areas of the ventromedial cortex superior to the orbitofrontal cortex are much less associated with social functions and more with pure emotion regulation. Research in developmental neuroscience also suggested that neural networks in the ventromedial prefrontal cortex are rapidly developing during adolescence and young adulthood supporting emotion regulation through the amygdala being associated with a decrease in cortisol levels.

Anterior Cingulate Cortex
The anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) is the frontal part of the cingulate cortex, that resembles a "collar" form around the corpus callosum, the fibrous bundle that relays neural signals between the right and left cerebral hemispheres of the brain. It includes both the ventral and dorsal areas of the cingulate cortex, and appears to play a role in a wide variety of autonomic functions, such as regulating blood pressure and heart rate, as well as rational cognitive functions, such as reward anticipation, decision-making, empathy and emotion.

The anterior cingulate cortex can be divided anatomically based on cognitive (dorsal), and emotional (ventral) components. The dorsal part of the ACC is connected with the prefrontal cortex and parietal cortex as well as the motor system and the frontal eye fields making it a central station for processing top-down and bottom-up stimuli and assigning appropriate control to other areas in the brain. By contrast, the ventral part of the ACC is connected with amygdala, nucleus accumbens, hypothalamus, and anterior insula, and is involved in assessing the salience of emotion and motivational information. The ACC seems to be especially involved when effort is needed to carry out a task such as in early learning and problem-solving.

Posterior Cingulate Cortex

The posterior cingulate cortex is the backmost part of the cingulate cortex, lying behind the anterior cingulate cortex. This is the upper part of the "limbic lobe". The cingulate cortex is made up of an area around the midline of the brain. Surrounding areas include the retrosplenial cortex and the precuneus. The posterior cingulate forms a central node in the "default mode" network of the brain. Along with the precuneus, it has been implicated as a neural substrate for human awareness in numerous studies of both the anesthesized and vegetative (coma) state. The posterior cingulate may also be involved in the capacity to understand what other people believe.

Insular Cortex
In each hemisphere of the mammalian brain the insular cortex (often called insula, insulary cortex or insular lobe) is a portion of the cerebral cortex folded deep within the lateral sulcus between the temporal lobe and the frontal lobe. The cortical area overlying it towards the lateral surface of the brain is the operculum (meaning "lid"). The opercula are formed from parts of the enclosing frontal, temporal and parietal lobes. It is believed to be involved in consciousness.

The insular cortex is divided into two parts: the larger anterior insula and the smaller posterior insula in which more than a dozen field areas have been identified. The insulae play a role in diverse functions usually linked to emotion or the regulation of the body's homeostasis. These functions include perception, motor control, self-awareness, cognitive functioning, and interpersonal experience. Related to these it is involved in psychopathology.
FTC Targets Sellers Who Deceptively Marketed International Driver's Permits over the Internet and via Spam

Six Complaints Filed Against Firms that Sold Fake Documents
The fortunes of several marketers who used the Internet and spam to sell purportedly authentic international driver's permits (IDPs) have taken a decided turn for the worse, with the Federal Trade Commission today announcing six federal district court complaints to stop their allegedly deceptive behavior. The Commission's actions, taken as part of the "Operation License for Trouble" law enforcement sweep, targeted sellers who, under the guise of "international law," pitched their worthless documents to immigrants and other consumers who were seeking an alternative to a government-issued driver's license or identification document. According to the FTC, authentic IDPs, which are available in the U.S. from only two authorized agencies, American Automobile Association (AAA) and American Automobile Touring Alliance (AATA), have a very limited use and purpose.

"The defendants deceptively marketed bogus documents," said J. Howard Beales III, Director of the FTC's Bureau of Consumer Protection. "They misled people with limited English proficiency and those whose licenses have been revoked about the value and the purpose of the IDP. And they charged them exorbitant fees. We're pleased that the FTC can put this scam in park." He noted that while the permits being deceptively marketed on the Internet typically sold for between $65 and $375, the real IDPs offered by AAA and the AATA are just $10 apiece.

Legitimate IDPs, which are issued pursuant to the United Nations Road Traffic Convention of 1949, assist a person with a valid driver's license to drive in foreign countries that have also signed the Convention. Notably, an IDP is not a substitute for a government-issued driver's license; rather it is simply a booklet that translates that government-issued driver's license into a number of different languages. Therefore, IDPs merely serve as a translation document for a government-issued driver's license, and they have no value independent of such government-issued licenses. IDPs do not protect their holders from traffic enforcement or from "points," and cannot be used in place of suspended or revoked license, or as identification in lieu of a government-issued document.

"The FTC's action helps alert consumers to these scams, while letting bogus marketers know this conduct won't be tolerated," said Sandra Hughes, vice president of AAA Travel. "These scams lead innocent travelers to spend hundreds of dollars for false documents. Even worse, they encourage unlicensed drivers to return to our highways, endangering all of us."

The Commission's Complaints
The FTC filed complaints in federal district court against the following defendants:

1) Yad Abraham (Abraham), also known as (a.k.a.) Tim Thorn and Timothy Thorn, individually and doing business as (d.b.a.) Sharpthorn Internet Solutions and Internex, LLC; 2) Jaguar Business Concepts, LP d.b.a. Libertymall.com, Cheyenne Investment Alliance, LLC (Cheyenne), and Jacqueline Demer, individually and as member/manager of Cheyenne; 3) Jordan Maxwell, a.k.a. Russell Pine, individually and doing business as BBCOA, a.k.a. BBC of America, a.k.a. Better Book and Cassette of America, and Vic Varjabedian, a.k.a. Victor Varjabedian, a.k.a. Varouj Varjabedian, individually; 4) William Scott Dion, individually and d.b.a. PT Resource Center and PTRC, a.k.a. Don Glessner; 5) Carlton Press, Inc., Carlton Press, Ltd., and Kim Fleming Bo Weiss; and 6) one or more parties d.b.a. the Institute for International Licensing (IIL), Aladdin Financial Management, University Systems, and Wheelie International Limited.

In each complaint, the Commission alleges that, in violation of the FTC Act, the defendants falsely claim that their IDPs are a legitimate alternative to a state-issued driver's license, and misrepresent that: 1) their IDPs authorize consumers to drive legally in the United States; 2) their IDPs allow consumers to avoid points or traffic violations, as well as sanctions for driving with a suspended or revoked driver's license; and 3) their IDPs can be used in the United States as an identification document in the same ways that a person uses a government-issued photo identification document. The allegations against each defendant are presented below.

Abraham. According to the FTC, the defendants conducted a nationwide scheme to sell worthless IDPs through the drivelegal.com Web site. The defendants contended that the documents met all the conditions of the U.N. Convention and that they could be used to avoid many types of driving sanctions, such as points. The defendants further claimed the IDP would allow users to obtain auto insurance and rent cars - neither of which was true. Their IDP costs $350, plus shipping and handling.

Libertymall.com. Using the Libertymall.com Web site, the defendants sold supposedly authentic IDPs, claiming they were developed in compliance with the U.N. Convention. Claiming that their documents would enable visitors to become "permanent tourists," the defendants charged consumers $65 per IDP, which the FTC alleges was simply a laminated card. Each card was signed by a purported "Agent" of the so-called International Travel Association.

BBCOA. The FTC alleges that this defendants' IDPs, which they sold over the BBCOA Web site at a cost of $85 each, were nothing more than a laminated card and an IDP booklet that closely resembled a real IDP - except that they contained a seal of the so-called International Travel Association. In addition to selling supposedly authentic IDPs, the defendants also marketed credit repair services and "debt termination programs," and the FTC's complaint contains additional allegations regarding these activities.

PT Resource Center. Operating since at least 1995, PTRC's Web site contained statements very similar to those found on the LibertyMall.com and BBCOA Web sites. In addition to providing a supposedly real IDP for $65, the defendants went as far as informing consumers exactly what to say if stopped by the police and stressing that "Your IDP . . . [is] perfectly valid if used in a lawful manner. Following these tips will greatly increase your success rate, and minimize contact with 'Big Brother.'"

Carlton Press. Operating since at least October 2000, the defendants used two Web sites to pitch their supposedly real IDPs for $147 each. The booklets they offered were exactly the same as those sold by BBCOA and PTRC.

Institute for International Licensing (IIL). These defendants also sold their permits over two Web sites, pitching them as a way for consumers with poor driving records or revoked or suspended driver's licenses to get around the system. Consumers wishing to buy a permit from their Web site were asked to mail in certain personal information, while those responding to spam messages were instructed to call a recorded line. Either way, the result was the same - consumers were sent two IDPs, along with a rubber stamp bearing the company's logo and instructions for using the document.

In each matter, the Commission is seeking either temporary and permanent injunctive relief, as well as other relief as deemed appropriate by the court, to prevent current and future violations of the FTC Act.

Consumer Education
Consumers seeking more information about how to avoid potentially deceptive ads for IDPs are encouraged to read the new FTC consumer alert: "Ads for International Driver's Licenses or Permits Could be a Dead End." This publication, which is available on the Commission's Web, site also cautions consumers that it is against the law for U.S. citizens and residents to use an international driver's permit in place of their state-issued driver's license.

The Commission vote authorizing staff to file each of the six complaints was 5-0. The complaints were filed in the following courts: 1) Yad Abraham, U.S. District Court for the Central District of California on January 8, 2003; 2) Liberty Mall.com, U.S. District Court for the District of Maryland, Northern Division on January 13, 2003; 3) BBCOA, U.S. District Court for the Central District of California, Western Division on January 7, 2003; 4) PT Resource Center, U.S. District Court for the District of Massachusetts on January 8, 2003; 5) Carlton Press, U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York on January 10, 2003; and 6) IIL, U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia on January 7, 2003.

The FTC would like to thank the Offices of the Attorney General of the states of Illinois and Missouri, the California Department of Motor Vehicles, the AAA, the AATA, the American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators, the Northeast Region of the U.S. Postal Inspection Service, and the Office of the U.S. Attorney for the District of Massachusetts for their support and assistance in bringing these cases. The Office of Fair Trading in the United Kingdom and the Consumer Ombudsman's Office of Denmark also provided assistance.

NOTE: The Commission files a complaint when it has "reason to believe" that the law has or is being violated, and it appears to the Commission that a proceeding is in the public interest. A complaint is not a finding or ruling that the defendants have actually violated the law. The cases will be decided by the courts in which they were filed.

Copies of the complaints are available from the FTC's Web site at http://www.ftc.gov and also from the FTC's Consumer Response Center, Room 130, 600 Pennsylvania Avenue, N.W., Washington, D.C. 20580.
Mystery Religions & Interconnected Secret S...

The following lecture encompasses a fragment of the great truths. Prepare to undertake a mind’s journey to the depths of the unknown where the familiar meets the unfamiliar. Let the light inside of you be the guide.

The whole world’s a stage, and every player is on it whether they know it or not and whether they like it or not. From religion, education, to money, this system has allegorized its ways into the psyche of humanity for clandestine motives.

The Aryan religion developed in Persia was very similar to other groups of Indo-Europeans. They believed in numerous gods and did not make any visual representations of their gods relative to that done by other religions.

Hinduism had its roots in Aryanism, to which the ideas of the Brahman sprang. Worship occurred around the fire (this paved the way for Zoroastrian – Pagan worship), while Hindus tended their worship in temples. The word Hinduism means dwellers, particularly those within the Indus River. A vast majority of Hindus today live in India, while smaller portions can be found in Sri Lanka, Southern Africa, European Areas, and the United States.

The creed of Hinduism is a mere derivation of Magism, as is true for many Asiatic philosophies. Over 250,000 gods were created by Brahminism. Thus serving true of the constant mental degradation of their war-shippers due to the perceived terror of supernatural beings.

Of course, this is just the exoteric study of Brahminism. The true initiates were re-veiled a different story of their creed. The Brahmins believed that the majority of people were not fit to understand their true philosophies, which is the reason for the concealment --- a theme which is far too commonly executed.
In the Mahanirvana Tanra, translated by Arthur Avalon, it states:

“THE Indian Tantras, which are numerous, constitute the Scripture (Shastra) of the Kaliyuga, and as such are the voluminous source of present and practical orthodox “Hinduism.” The Tantra Shastra is, in fact, and whatever be its historical origin, a development of the Vaidika Karmakanda, promulgated to meet the needs of that age. Shiva says: “For the benefit of men of the Kali age, men bereft of energy and dependent for existence on the food they eat, the Kaula doctrine, O auspicious one! Is given” (Chap. IX., verse 12). To the Tantra we must therefore look if we would understand aright both ritual, yoga, and sadhana of all kinds, as also the general principles of which these practices are but the objective expression.”
This is just another example that every religion was created to guide the select groups of the masses. This entire system is like the Brave New World where you have members of different ranks doing their job, from the highest class to the lowest class.

Albert Pike, grand commander of the Scottish rite of freemasonry, confederate military officer of the civil war, on page 105 of morals and dogma states this too:

“Masonry, like all the  Religions, all the Mysteries, Hermeticism and  Alchemy, conceals its  secrets from all except the Adepts and Sages, or  the Elect, and uses  false explanations and misinterpretations of its  symbols to mislead  those who deserve to be misled;
p. 105
to conceal the Truth, which it calls Light, from them, and to draw them away from it. Truth is not for those who are unworthy or unable to receive it, or would pervert it. So God Himself incapacitates many men, by color-blindness, to distinguish colors, and leads the masses away from the highest Truth, giving them the power to attain only so much of it as it is profitable to them to know. Every age has had a religion suited to its capacity.”

So there you have it, straight from the horse’s mouth. This fact permeates not just secret societies but all religions, including science, for science is the modern dualistic religion, coupled with the New Age.
Albert Pike states again,

“MASONRY is a succession of allegories, the mere vehicles of great lessons in morality and philosophy. You will more fully appreciate its spirit, its object, its purposes, as you advance in the different Degrees, which you will find to constitute a great, complete, and harmonious system.

If you have been disappointed in the first three Degrees, as you have received them, and if it has seemed to you that the performance has not come up to the promise, that the lessons of morality are not new, and the scientific instruction is but rudimentary, and the symbols are imperfectly explained, remember that the ceremonies and lessons of those Degrees have been for ages more and more accommodating themselves, by curtailment and sinking into commonplace, to the often limited memory and capacity of the Master and Instructor, and to the intellect and needs of the Pupil and Initiate; that they have come to us from an age when symbols were used, not to reveal but to conceal; when the commonest learning was confined to a select few, and the simplest principles of morality seemed newly discovered truths; and that these antique and simple Degrees now stand like the broken columns of a roofless Druidic temple, in their rude and mutilated greatness; in many parts, also, corrupted by time, and disfigured by modern additions and absurd interpretations. They are but the entrance to the great Masonic Temple, the triple columns of the portico”

Freemasonry is full of high sciences veiled in lore and allegories, purposefully intended for the profane as they call it to abuse, misuse, and be skeptical of the truth. This only makes man be further away from truth than otherwise.

Once more, said by Albert Pike, page 129, “The air is one vast library, on whose pages is forever written all that man has ever said or even whispered. There, in their mutable, but unerring characters, mixed with the earliest, as well as the latest signs of mortality, stand forever recorded, vows unredeemed, promises unfulfilled; perpetuating, in the movements of each particle, all in unison, the testimony of man’s changeful will. God reads that book, though we cannot.”

What your mind just witnessed was their High Sciences from the Holy of Holies. These individuals knew and have practiced the reactions of the human psyche against all forms of subversions and attacks. By reading the tale of Etidorhpa, which is Aphrodite backwards, you can become more acquainted to their high sciences.

From the book Etidorhpa, by John Uri Lloyd 1897, page 315, “I turned, and in the direction indicated, saw, in amazement, floating in the distant space a snow- and ice-clad vessel in full sail. She was headed diagonally from us, and was moving rapidly across the field of vision. Every spar and sail was clearly defined, and on her deck, and in the rigging I beheld sailors clad in winter garments pursuing their various duties.

As I gazed, enraptured, she disappeared in the distance.
“A phantom vessel,” I murmured.

“No,” he replied; “the abstraction of a vessel sailing on the ocean above us. Every object on earth is the second to an imprint in another place. There is an apparent reproduction of matter in so-called vacancy, and on unseen pages a recording of all events. As that ship sailed over the ocean above us, she disturbed a current of energy, and it left its impress as an outline on a certain zone beneath, which is parallel with that upon which we now chance to stand.”

“I can not comprehend,” I muttered.

“No,” he answered; “to you it seems miraculous, as to all men an unexplained phenomenon approaches the supernatural. All that is is natural. Have men not been told in sacred writings that their every movement is being recorded in the Book of Life, and do they not often doubt because they can not grasp the problem? May not the greatest scientist be the most apt skeptic?”

“Yes,” I replied.

“You have just seen,” he said, “the record of an act on earth, and in detail it is being printed elsewhere in the Book of Eternity. If you should return to earth’s surface you could not by stating these facts convince even the persons on that same ship, of your sanity. You could not make them believe that hundreds of miles beneath, both their vessel and its crew had been reproduced in fac simile, could you?”

No.”

“Were you to return to earth you could not convince men that you had existed without breath, with a heart dead within you. If you should try to impress on mankind the facts that you have learned in this journey, what would be the result?”

p. 315

“I would probably be considered mentally deranged; this I have before admitted.””

There is a whole world not revealed to you. The media originated from the Persians and peoples of the Mediterranean. The code can be seen during the reign of Cyrus the Great of the Golden Age, where the area of present day Iran then known as Medes existed. Medes was one of the focal points of Zoroastrian thinking, as can be overstood from their pictographs.

The Assyrians, Babylonians, Kassites, Arabs, Persians, and Parthians transferred their power of Voice to the area of Susa, where it was then symbolically and now literally, transferred to the United States. Susa is a masonic pictographic cipher for U S A.

In the History of the Assyrians, Chaldeans, Medes, Lydians and Carthaginians by Edward Farr published in 1850, it states, “After the deluge, it appears from the sacred writings, that the children of Noah congregated in their first emigration upon the banks of the Euphrates in the land of shinar, and in that part of the land which has been defined under the term Babylonia. While there, they consulted together, to build a very lofty tower.” Go to, said they, “let us BUILD us a city and a TOWER, whose top may reach unto heaven; and let us make us a name, lest we be scattered abroad upon the face of the whole earth,” Gen. xi 4. (Remember now the root words of GENESIS are gene, which means to generate, hence genie, and Isis, the female regenerative principle, the feminine builder. Of genie, it now should make sense why it granted 3 (trinity) wishes. It was a religious creator). The plan was put into execution; the tower was reaching towards heaven, when the work was stopped by the Almighty. He confounded the language of the builders and by this new dispensation, scattered them abroad upon the face of the earth. Ver 5-9.”

In the masonic bibs, which are their symbolic aprons and bib-les, the word God or Creator really refers to the group of the deepest control structures that have engineered and controlled humanity for ages. The word builders is a code for Cain-Abel, those whom are Able to be Honorable to the Great Work, and Build, as Masons intend to do, the bricks of society. (See Another Brick in the Wall)

Going back to Hinduism, one main distinct feature amongst other religions was that Hinduism held the first belief of the transmigration of the soul, which in their code means reincarnation. (Taking a reign over the nation). This belief was a code for the transmigration of DNA which is part of their Higher Esoteric Sciences. The caduceus is an ancient symbol, surpassing the antiquities of thousands of years, used by her-mes, Thoth, and mercury, to represent the generative principle, the phallic sign, and especially, DNA.

The wings of the caduceus symbolize the flight of life towards heaven via Jacob’s ladder and the discovery of the supposed double-helix of DNA by Watson and crick was actually originated from the Masonic High Sciences. It is already very obvious that the higher sciences were created by Freemasons, as can be noted by the influx of Rosicrucian scientists pervading the fields, especially by the establishment of the Royal Society, which is a Masonic foundation by nature. Members of the Rosicrucian order for the development of Science include and are not limited to: Johannes Kepler, famed German astronomer and proponent of the scientific revolution, Georg Joachim Rheticus (which I will add that Joachim is a code for twin towers of Joachin and Boaz), famed mathematician and cartographer, John Dee, famed mathematician, astronomer, consultant of Queen Elizabeth the 1, studier of Hermetic philosophy, and prophesier of the future powers and trading blocks, Tycho Brahe, advancer of astronomical knowledge, Robert Boyle, famous chemist current scientists of chemistry are supposedly indebted to, Rene Descartes, popularized philosopher, Francis Bacon, cryptographic writer of Shakespeare, and much more not named.

Isn’t it surprising that in the event of all this evidence, people still cannot understand their scientific world view is entirely rigged? Prior to the advent of science and even the royal society was the Invisible College which was the main precursor for the royal society. Existing in the United Kingdom, this Rosicrucian society headed the enlightenment of its time.

The advent of Buddhism by the supposed astrological figure, Buddha, introducing the preaching of equality, brought forth the denial of the Vedic system. As Pike, earlier quoted, of the structure of religions, the Hegelian dialectic of then neo-religious thought established antidotes to the problems of the system. Brahmanism was purposefully tyrannical, thus a new religion of Buddhism where equality (Socialism) being promoted was an impeding yearning that stopped societal progress and uplift.

Buddha is not a name but a title. It means Sage. The real name of this sage was Sakyamuni. He is not a person, even though speculation of a birth was read at the 6th century B.C., because he is simply a solar myth. Prior to the symbol of Buddha, Krishna was the solar symbol. The Swastika represents a windmill and this is exactly what is happening to symbolic religions. Solar cults are spreading to modern forms, such as Christianity and now the New Age, which proposes Light to be the new Creator.

The Swastika is a code for the Fylfot. Fylfot is a phonetic code for a difficult life, (backwards it pronounced tough life). It is the symbol of the original Cross (Crux), after the creation of the Crux Ansata, also known as the Ankh. The Fylfot, representing a windmill, has the option of pulling or pushing energy. In these cases, the energy (i.e. Symbol) of Krishna is transferred over to Buddha which is then transferred over to Christ, similar to how world powers transfer wealth from Africa to India to England to America to China, and eventually to Afghanistan. These nations play the puppet game of power transfer, symbolic of the hot potato (Scientific word: SOLanum tuberosum; sol is Latin for sun).

Gymnosophists, meaning the naked philosopher, were the Magi Masons (M.M) that had spread in Africa (Ethiopa and near the Nile). They spread their esoteric doctrines towards Asiatic theosophy and believed in the immortality of the soul. The immortality of the soul is a prominent dogma in most Masonic creeds and rites, usually symbolized by the emblem of the Acacia and Evergreen. Ammon, the name for Jupiter, was worshipped (war shipped) by both Ethiopians and Egyptians. Priest classes of Ethiopia and Egypt would congregate yearly to celebrate the Table of the Sun (Greek term) which consisted of sacrificial rituals. (See works of Paul LeValley for general knowledge on the gymnosophists)

The Buddhists shared a solar chant similar to Freemasons, that being Aum and Solomon respectively. Aum is the trinity form of Om, which means sun. Solomon is a derivation of three times great (Hermes Trismegistus), meaning sun sun sun, literally. Aum is the simplified triad of Solomon, representing Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva. Masons after the symbol of the Arch named this the Tri-Angle, as well as Jabulon. Om, is a derivation of Ohm, which is derived from the Persian syllable Hom. All mean sun, while Hom shares the property of the Yggdrasil.

Hom, being the regenerative symbol (Tree of life and Sol), it was parallel to the Lingam. The Lingam is the male principle, the phallus, which can be seen all over the world by means of their obelisks. You can find many of these phalluses in Rome, Egypt, France, Turkey, Ethiopia, and the United States. Its dual symbol is the Yoni, used amongst the Orientalists; it corresponded with the feminine principle.

The worship of the Phallic symbol was said to have begun in Egypt, which is partly true. The exoteric story is that it originated from the lost member of Osiris by Typhon, which was the exoteric symbolism of Day losing by Night. The bisexual ecclesiastic priests and ancients worshipped this symbol even though they were being conned. The Jews worshipped the Penis as well, which in Jude, Chapter 3 speaks of them serving Baal and the groves. The latter term is translated to Asherah which means Phallus. To perfect the circle in the religion of Baal, a dot, which is the phallus, needs to placed inside the yoni. You can see this symbol in the corporate logo of Target. More modern versions of this symbol can be seen in the Masonic emblem as well as the Communist sickle and hammer (derived from Norse mythology of the Mjollnir, which translated to ham-mer).

Before the emergence of Buddhism, Zoroastrianism was the first religion after the Primitive Religions which was after the last Deluge. Zoroastrianism was formerly labeled Magi from Magus, which is the root of words such as magic, image, and imagination which all resemble the formation or generation of some sort. Generation (e.g. Genesis) is synonymous to regeneration and that to generative principle.

Resurrection is another allegory of reincarnation, all symbolizing the sexual nature of religions.

The reign of Magism existed thousands of years prior to the Roman eras, Zoroaster conquering his reign more than four to five thousand years ago. Zoroaster, existing prior to the Proto-Elamite civilization (3000 B.C.), promulgated the duality of Good and Evil, in forms of Ahrimon and Oromazes. The former being the principle of evil and the latter being the principle of good.

The Christian ideology of Creator forming the world through the word was adopted by the Zoroastrian philosophy of creation by Oromazes, the Light-bearer, of which created the word through speech (logos).
Oromazes, also known as Ahura Mazda, is the literal origin of the corporate name: Mazda. Mazda translates to Female and Truth, or simply the Feminine Principle. Oromazes, Ahura Mazda, or Ormuzd is said to be born first from Time. The esoteric dogmas state Ormuzd performed the creating process after his image and likeness. He created six disciples who were the messengers of his truth that communicated with the profane, the commoners.

The six disciples are now coded as genies, when in antiquity referred to generation, due to the root word gen. The mythologies cabalistically put forth the creation of the world by Ormuzd under 6 periods which is the same order to be found in Genesis. (This is not a coincidence)

All of these points are interconnected and they equate to their major agenda, which is termed the Great Work. Saint (can be rearranged to Natsi) Augustine was from Hippo because as the phonetics suggest, he was a hypocrite. St. Augustine was a Christian theologian, quoted to have said in The Scottish Review, volume 7 of 1886 publication, “What is now called the Christian religion, existed among the ancients and was not absent from the beginning of the human race, until Christ came in the flesh; from which time the true religion, which existed already, began to be called Christian.”

The primitive religions Augustine referred to was of Egyptian origin, which them too, originated their teachings from an ancient source. The castes of priests amongst the Egyptian eras were the sole public controllers of that time. The pharaohs then were mainly disposable puppets put in front of the slaves for the great show (as Francis Bacon said, under the pseudonym of Will-I-Am Shake-the-Speare, life is a stage). Plato, a Grecian philosopher viewed as merely a child in the intellectual sense by the Egyptian priests, fancied the governmental system that was idealized, calling this city of God the Republic, hence Plato’s republic. Plato’s Republic is merely a guide to a Utopian system for the elites and no one else. The commoners will be sold the idea that a future utopia exists though, even if it is furthest from the truth.
You will find in your studies that those elect scholars, typically in antiquated books, spill the truth to the public. One example being is of how the priestly caste professed exoteric doctrines while they worshipped their own esoteric doctrines. The initiates that were administered by the priests during ceremonies were only slowly re-veiled their esoteric doctrines after great examination. Of course what this means is they had to make sure the initiate was a willing slave, capable of giving up dignity and morality in exchange for physical pleasure.

Osiris is neither a person nor a symbol of the sun in all respects. Osiris is a title as per se Sir and Lord. Osiris is derived from Iswara which is linked to Brahma, translating henceforth to Supreme Lord. Osiris is the title ascribed to the Grand Architect of the Universe by Freemasonry which is elucidated in public and private quarters. The 2009 film, Mr.Nobody reveals the Masonic reference to the Grand Architect of the Universe, of course being a symbolic icon of regeneration. If you have not seen the film Mr. Nobody, it is suggested you do so for symbolic studies.

Freemasonry and ancient Mysticism veil their ideologies under Naturalistic dualities. For example, Osiris is said to have been killed by Typhon which is another word for Python. It symbolizes Python of the mud raising vapors to blind Osiris. Apollo, which is equivalent to Osiris since both are the sun, shot his arrows at Typhon to cast the rays of Light to the people once more. Osiris, the sun, has his energy cut into 14 pieces, to which Isis attempts to relocate. This is symbolic of the average 14 to 15 days required for a full moon to appear after the next.

Isis is said to be a female yet that is only half the truth. Isis is a hermaphrodite. Her name is equated to Ashtaroth which translated means pillar, which is the symbol of a phallus. When Isis was looking for Osiris’ phallus, she was really looking for her own. The reason is simple. A true hermaphrodite can regenerate itself.

To the commoners, Isis is generally symbolized as the moon, which is the depiction of the feminine energy. In addition however, Isis is also Hathor, which in Egyptian is Iophis. This translates to Sophia, meaning Wise. Isis is depicted as having a Bull’s horns for the Bull was an ancient symbol of worship representing the penetration of the equinox.

As you are already aware, the Cross is the symbol of Fire and Light for Light is the symbol of Direction. The Egyptians used the symbol of the Cross in the form of the letter T. The Indian adepts were spiritually blessed by use of the Cross symbol. In all ancient cultures, the Cross represented a compass of the Universe for it pointed NEWS, hence where the word News is derived.

The death of Osiris by Typhon is symbolized in the third degree of Freemasonry, where Hiram Abiff takes symbolic position of Osiris. These Egyptian Mysteries are further elucidated in the Crata Repoa. The Crata Repoa was published in 1770 and translated to French in 1821. The book is believed to give account of the Higher Degrees of Egyptian Initiation. In Thebes, the priest experiencing initiation had to undergo seven degrees, Pastophoros, Neocoros, Melanophoros, Kistophoros, Balahate, Astronomos, and Propheta.

The first is of science, second of geometry, third of the Osirian death, fourth of the Egyptian laws, fifth of chemistry, sixth of math and astronomy, and seventh of the greatest secrets.

The priest was told the secrets of hieroglyphic writing and its true meaning, something which has even now been concealed to the public. In the second degree the initiate was led to two pillars of which stood a Griffin in the center. The pillars are symbols of east and west, while the Griffin symbolized the sun. Here he was taught of geometry and the secret to the Fall of Man which will begin in the near future. The third degree was the Gate of Death which represented the death of Osiris. In this degree, the priest needed to learn the Ammonite language in order to communicate to other initiates, for this was their secret language. As of today, the supposed scholars do not know much of this language for the evidence has been conspicuously lost. The latter degrees as a whole composed of symbolic rituals of regeneration, like many other facts of the Mysteries.

The Mystery religions have placed a war on women which is why much of the symbolism revolves around regeneration (This is of course just one reason). As said by Adam Weishapt, student of Ingoldstadt University and founder of the Illuminati claimed: "There is no way of influencing men so powerfully as by means of the women. These should therefore be our chief study; we should insinuate ourselves into their good opinion, give them hints of emancipation from the tyranny of public opinion, and of standing up for themselves; it will be an immense relief to their enslaved minds to be freed from any one bond of restraint, and it will fire them the more, and cause them to work for us with zeal, without knowing that they do so, for they will only be indulging their own desire of personal admiration."
